PhD position
The Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical Science, is offering a full-time PhD-position for a duration of four (4) years. The position includes 25% mandatory duties such as teaching, exam work, or supervision, depending on departmental needs.
The position is part of the project “Temporary inconvenience or early warning signs? A new take on maternal symptoms in early pregnancy and their consequences”, funded by the University of Bergen.
About the project/work tasks:
Pregnancy is a unique time of life where mother and child live in symbiosis. This relationship however induces multiple symptoms for mothers including nausea, vomiting, bleeding, pain, fatigue and many more. Do you want to discover why women become sick and what it means for the future health of mother and child?
The candidate will be given the opportunity to work on the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study, a unique study with detailed information on approximately hundred thousand pregnancies (fhi.no/en/ch/studies/moba ). The candidate will study symptoms in early pregnancy using genetic epidemiology. The project will be performed at the Center for Diabetes Research (uib.no/en/diabetes ) located at the Children and Youth Hospital in Bergen, Norway. The candidate will be provided guidance and training, will receive help for the development of their career, and will be given the opportunity to conduct research exchanges abroad.
Other work tasks:
- Curate and organize symptoms reported by women during pregnancy
- Establish pregnancy profiles based on the prevalence and timing of symptoms
- Study the genetic underpinnings of the symptoms using SNP array data
Qualifications and personal qualities:
The applicant must
- hold a master's degree or equivalent in the field of genetic epidemiology, statistical genetics, medical data science, or bioinformatics.
- have academic training and practical experience in data science applied to medical or population genomics or other omic
- demonstrate experience in analyzing large omic data
- be proficient in one programming language
- be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others
- show ability and motivation to carry out the proposed PhD project
- be fluent in oral and written English, see documentation requirements

About the PhD position (applies to university PhD positions):

Organized research training (PhD program):
The selected candidate will be required to enrol in the University of Bergen’s approved PhD programme, aiming to complete the degree within three years. Admission to the organized research training (PhD program) at the Faculty is essential for this position.
Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training plan, must be submitted no later than three months after the date of commencement.
The PhD-position:
PhD-positions are fixed-term appointments. Candidates cannot be employed in a PhD position for more than one fixed-term period at the same institution, nor have held a similar position at any institution within the region.
