What you'll receive

You'll receive a scholarship valued at up to $5,000, paid in full at the commencement and/or during the scholarship placement, to be spent towards travel, accommodation and some living expenses whilst on placement.

The flights and accommodation will be arrnaged internally by the School of Nursing.


Eligibility

To be considered for a Garawa Nursing Scholarship, you must:

  • identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Person as defined under Section 5 of the Confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Descent Policy
  • be open and willing to undertake a primary health care placement in a rural or remote Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island community in the Northern Territory, where there is an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander facilitator and/or preceptor.

You must be enrolled and commencing in either:

  • the third year of NS42 Bachelor of Nursing in Semester 1, 2026
    • This includes successfully completed unit NSB233 and being on track to enrol for NSB334 in Semester 1, 2026
  • the final year of NS89 Master of Nursing – Entry to Practice in Semester 1, 2026
    • This includes successfully completed unit NSN903 and being on track to enrol for NSN904 in Semester 1, 2026.

How to apply

You need to complete and submit the online application form by 11.59pm on the closing date, 30 September 2025.

Your application should include the following attachments:

  • a copy of your resume / curriculum vitae (CV)
  • a copy of your academic record from HiQ site
  • proof of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent status
  • a written response of up to 1,000 words total, addressing the following application questions:
    • provide examples of your academic ability and potential to succeed at university (25%)
    • describe your personal attributes that contribute to your success at university, including factors such as community engagement, career aspirations, interests, drive, ability to overcome adversity (25%)
    • explain how you handle situations in your nursing that may be unfamiliar or different to what you are used to (25%)
    • discuss how the Garawa Nursing Scholarship will assist you in achieving your current and future career goals (25%).
  • two referee reports that recommend you as likely to succeed in your studies and the contribution you make or could make in your community.

What happens next?

Once the selection process is complete, you will be notified in writing of the outcome of your application. The successful applicant may be notified of the outcome of their application by telephone or email prior to receiving the formal written notification.

If successful, you will be invited to attend the annual Faculty of Health Student Awards Ceremony.


Conditions

To retain your Garawa Nursing Scholarship and receive the payment, you must:

  • maintain a course grade point average (GPA) of at least 4.0
  • maintain a full-time enrolment of at least 36 credit points for both Semester 1 and 2, 2026.

About the scholarship

Professor Bruce Lawford and Dr Susan Shadforth are committed to supporting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander nursing students with costs associated with clinical placements in regional and remote communities through the Garawa Nursing Scholarship.
