About the Job
 

Purpose of the position 
This position has lead worker responsibilities. This position gives care to greenhouses, gardens, greens, lawns, trees etc. The person also is required to maintain equipment, record keeping, and ordering supplies. UMM faculty and staff demonstrate an appreciation of cultural diversity and the ability to work effectively with people from a wide variety of backgrounds, cultures, and experience.


Job duties

Work includes both interior and exterior projects within high visible areas of the UMM Campus (75%)

  • Jobs may include mowing, weeding trimming applying chemicals, removing trash & debris, etc.
  • Keeps records of information needs as required.

Instructs and Demonstrates Work Methods and Processes (5%)

  • Plans, assigns and review others work. 
  • Monitors completion of work assignments
  • Interprets instructions for projects and passes on that information 

Provides specialized gardening techniques (5%)

  • Works with management to evaluate and procure equipment, tools, supplies, and vehicles
  • Care for trees (arborist), turf management, and landscape design and construction 
  • Plants flowers, shrubs, trees, seeds, bulbs, and vegetables. Picks out shoots. 
  • Transplants seedlings from the greenhouse to outside plots or to pots. 

Snow Removal (5%)

  • Help operations with shoveling, salting, sanding, operating snow removal equipment 
      and plowing with vehicles

Miscellaneous Year Round Duties (5%)

  • Train student workers 
  • Equipment maintenance

Other duties as assigned (5%)

The Teamsters Bargaining Unit represents this position. Dues or fair share deductions will be made.
 


Qualifications
 

Essential knowledge, skills and abilities:

Must be able to read and write English. High School diploma or equivalent and 3 years’ experience performing Gardener classification duties or equivalent experience in commercial gardening, grounds maintenance, and or greenhouse work. Two-year degree in landscape maintenance or closely related field is required. (This may be waived for specific vacancies and comparable relevant experience may be substituted). Valid driver's license is required and pesticide applicators license required or obtained within 30 days of hire.

Physical and/or environmental requirements:

This position may require the ability to stand for the majority of the day, walk, bend, climb, crouch, knell, and stoop. You may work off ladders, scaffolding and aerial platforms. This position may need to lift heavy items (up to 50 pounds), standing, walking, bending, and crouch, kneel, and stoop for the entire day.
 


Pay and Benefits
 

Pay Range: $27.00 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment Category: 75%
