Position Overview
The Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards (SCCS) at the University of Kansas (KU) works to address incidents of non-academic misconduct on campus and educates students about the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities SCCS seeks to foster a holistic learning environment through education focused on community membership and standards.
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Student Conduct and Community Standards, the Restorative Justice Program Coordinator for Student Conduct and Community Standards develops and implements a full range of resolution options designed to address incidents within the KU community, including diversion processes, restorative justice (RJ) circles, conferences, mediations, etc. The Coordinator will foster strategic relationships within the campus community to promote RJ work across campus. The Coordinator will design alternative resolution and creative sanctioning experiences for students charged with violating the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities. The Coordinator is involved in a variety of activities covering the entire student conduct process (e.g. investigating and adjudicating allegations of non-academic misconduct), participating in the training of University Hearing Officers, and assisting with office outreach to other departments.
The primary focus of student conduct at the University of Kansas is educational rather than punitive. The guiding principle is to hold students accountable for behavior which violates the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities while preserving students’ rights and helping develop their decision-making abilities. SCCS employs a spectrum of resolution options to create a comprehensive conflict management experience for students and student organizations.
The Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards exists within Student Affairs. KU Student Affairs coordinates and develops student support services and programs and serves as an advocate for student needs across the university community that contribute to overall academic success. Student Affairs extends beyond the classroom. Our mission is to engage the KU community in programs, services, and spaces that make learning possible.
Job Description
65% - Restorative Justice Development and Administration
- Assist in all aspects of Restorative Justice Program development and administration.
- Researches, proposes, and implements alternative resolution models and creative educational sanctions for students charged with violating the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities, in accordance with national best practices in student conduct administration.
- Facilitates RJ processes to address incidents impacting individuals and communities.
- Develop key relationships with campus stakeholders to promote RJ work to University staff, faculty, and students.
- Collaborates with university partners to plan unique educational experiences designed to mitigate and address conflict.
- Presents student organization workshops on conflict resolution, restorative practices, and other topics as requested.
- Actively participants in and supports the prevention efforts and educational programming offered by Student Affairs units (i.e., Sexual Assault Prevention and Education Center, Sorority and Fraternity Life, Student Engagement Center, Health Education Resource Office, etc.).
- Evaluates attainment of learning outcomes and advances best practices in student conduct practice at the university
- Attends functions on behalf of the Office of Student Affairs (orientation, welcome events, etc.).
- Participates in other committees, task forces, or work groups on behalf of Student Conduct and Community Standards.
- Serves as a Hearing Officer for alleged violations of the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities.
- Supervise and provide leadership, direction, and support for Graduate Assistant(s)
- Reviews, evaluates, investigates, adjudicates, and sets sanctions for cases of alleged student misconduct violations in accordance with appropriate University policies and processes.
- Maintains records and files of disciplinary cases in keeping with applicable University policies and state/federal laws.
- Conducts regular follow-up with students who have not completed assigned sanctions and places administrative holds on accounts when appropriate.
- Inputs, maintains, and updates information regarding cases, inquiries, and content in respective databases.
- Administers restorative justice program assessment practices and reports findings to Director of Student Conduct and Community Standards for review.
- Participates in annual assessment projects that evaluate the efficacy and the learning outcomes of the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards.
- Continually monitors best practices in the field of Student Conduct and Community Standards and assists in implementation where appropriate.
- Other duties as assigned
Position Requirements
This position requires regular evening and weekend commitments. The Coordinator’s work schedule will be adjusted accordingly to balance these commitments.
