POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under moderate supervision, perform research work in medical and related technical. Work includes: 1) antibody labeling of Drosophila tissue, 2) generating transgenic flies by genetic crossing schemes and 3) performing connectomics analyses. This position will also contribute to communal laboratory general upkeep. This position supports the research program of the Dacks lab which seeks to understanding sensory processing in the brain and will allow neuroanatomical contributions to several projects.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Perform neuroanatomical research work in medical and related technical areas involves use of lab skills. These include dissecting brains, antibody labeling of tissues and scanning samples. (50%) 
  • Perform quantitative analysis of neuroanatomical samples collected.  This includes quantification of labeling intensity, cell counts and connectomics. (25%)
  • Back-up data, maintain data records, graphically represent results of experiments and write up results for publication. (10%) 
  • Perform general fly husbandry. (10%)

    NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Perform other duties as assigned which may include helping with fly collection, refreshing fly traps, wiping down counters. (5%)

     

    CONTACTS 

    Department: Daily contact with supervisor to discuss research and maintain workflow. (50%)

    University: Occasional contact with other departments to share information. (5%)

    External: No contact with vendors to exchange information. (0%)

    Students: Contact with undergraduate research volunteers to provide minor technical guidance. (10%)

    Lab personnel: Contact with graduate students and post-doctoral fellows to coordinate lab activities. (35%)

     

     

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY 

    This position has no direct supervision of staff employees.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree in science with 1 year of experience in an Drosophila neuroscience lab required.

     

    REQUIRED SKILLS 

  • Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures in a Drosophila lab.
  • Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. 
  • Ability to operate laboratory equipment.
  • Demonstrated history of successful support, education, and advocacy for all students, aligned with the values, mission, and messaging of the university, while adhering to the staff policy on conflict of commitment and interest. 
  • Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  • Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    General laboratory environment. May have exposure to hazards.

    This position is eligible for hybrid work arrangement up to two remote days per week at the discretion of the department. New employees may begin a hybrid schedule upon approval from the supervisor, successful completion of an orientation period and signing the remote work checklist certification form.
