Position Details
Full/Part Time Status:Full Time
Percent Time:100%
Position Description:

The long-term goal of the Glykys laboratory is to identify novel strategies to treat seizures and cytotoxic edema, especially in neonates. To reach this goal, we are addressing the following questions:

1. How does the brain inhibitory system work at the cellular level?

2. How do neurons swell, what is the outcome of neurological swelling, and how can we treat it?

Research areas of the lab include:

1. Changes in neuronal ion concentration and cellular volume during pathological conditions.

2. Neonatal seizures and epilepsy

3. GABAA receptor physiology.

We approach these research areas with electrophysiological and imaging. The Postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for studying neuronal swelling and dysfunction after excitotoxic injury, using advanced imaging techniques (including 2-photon microscopy) and electrophysiology. The position is within the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Neurology. The postdoctoral researcher will be under the supervision of Dr. Joseph Glykys, who is committed to the career development of trainees. Lab website: https://glykys.lab.uiowa.edu

Position Responsibilities

  • Record, plot, analyze and interpret data independently using electrophysiological and imaging techniques, including two-photon and whole-brain techniques.

  • Perform in vivo and in vitro experiments using imaging and electrophysiological techniques.

  • Perform rodent surgical techniques.

  • Maintain detailed and accurate notes of experimental results.

  • Present data at lab meetings and at regional or national conferences.

  • Adhere to safety and compliance guidelines.

  • Summarize and write findings pertinent to the research carried out.

  • Support other members of the laboratory with their expertise.

Education Requirement:

  • Ph.D. in Neurosciences or a closely related field.

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of one first-author publication.

  • Demonstrated experience with microscopy techniques and image analysis (confocal, multiphoton, or other advanced imaging techniques) and/or electrophysiology.

  • Demonstrated computational knowledge, use of ImageJ, and familiarity with a programming language, in addition to ImageJ.

  • Ability to multitask projects effectively, prioritize, and follow through to completion.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proficiency with computer programs – specifically MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

  • Maintain excellent lab notes and records.

  • Demonstrated ability to work cohesively in a team and display initiative in anticipating and resolving problems.

  • Able to work independently and propose follow-up experiments.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience with electrophysiology and/or two-photon or fluorescent imaging.

  • Experience with programming (Matlab and/or IgorPro).

  • Experience using and programming ImageJ or another image analysis software.

  • Molecular biology and/or experience with the use of viral vectors is a plus.
