Description of Position:

The laboratory of Dr. Xiaofei Jia at Florida State University College of Medicine is recruiting postdoctoral scholars. Motivated individuals with career ambitions in science are encouraged to apply. The Jia laboratory studies molecular mechanisms and structural bases of HIV-1 immune evasion mediated by viral accessory proteins. Recruited postdoctoral scholars will enjoy a stimulating and collegial environment while working on exciting structural biology and/or drug discovery projects. Responsibilities:

  • Lead structural biology and/or drug discovery project(s) by designing and performing experiments and analyzing results
  • Keep clear records of experiments and protocols
  • Communicate research with the PI, other lab members, and collaborative research groups
  • Write and publish scientific manuscripts describing research findings
  • Present research findings at national and international meetings/conferences
  • Mentor junior scientists in the lab

Qualifications:

Ph.D. degree in structural biology, biochemistry, biophysics, or a related field conferred within the last five years.

Preferred Qualification:

  • Previous experience in protein expression, purification, and biochemistry
  • Expertise in structural biology (cryo-EM and/or X-ray crystallography) or strong desire to learn structural biology
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities
  • Commitment to ethical research 
  • Good record-keeping and documentation habits
  • Question-driven; willing to enter new research territories and/or acquire new techniques
  • Resilient and positive approach to research and life as a scientist
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture
