Position Overview

The Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering at the University of Kansas invites applications for multiple full-time Postdoctoral Research Associates to support multidisciplinary research on (1) Performance prediction of large-scale concrete dams using machine learning techniques, 2) Fiber-optic sensor-based monitoring of large-scale reinforced concrete structures, and 3) repairing and retrofitting reinforced concrete structures with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) materials. Highly qualified candidates with any of the following backgrounds are particularly encouraged to apply:

  • Machine learning and deep learning, particularly for time-series modeling
  • Structural health monitoring (SHM), including fiber-optic sensor applications
  • Reinforced concrete structures, fiber-reinforced polymer materials
  • Experimental structural testing (large-scale), materials testing
  • This is a 1-yr appointment with the possibility of reappointment based on performance and funding availability. The preferred start will be in May 2025 or earlier. These positions involve working closely with faculty members and students on high-profile research projects related to repair and retrofitting of structures using fiber-reinforced polymers, inspection, damage detection, and performance prediction for large concrete structures.


    Job Description

    70% - Research

    • Conduct and oversee laboratory and/or computational research.
    • Supervise graduate and undergraduate students with their research.
    • Train students on proper procedures and safety regulations for the laboratory.
    • Analyze data associated with conducted research.
    30% - Reporting and Dissemination of Research
    • Prepare and present updates on ongoing research.
    • Provide written reports on research progress.
    • Participate in group meetings and present seminars to scientific community.
    • Publish journal and conference papers to disseminate results.

    Position Requirements

    • Postdoctoral Research Associates must be able to relocate to Lawrence, KS and work on-site at the University of Kansas.
    • Some out-of-state travel may be required to conduct field work as necessary; travel is anticipated to be less than 4 weeks per year.

    Required Qualifications

    Candidates will be evaluated on their research experience and communication skills, as evidenced by (i) CV and cover letter, (ii) prior research publications and/or patent applications, (iii) references, and (iv) interview by videoconference.

  • Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • NOTE: To be appointed at the Postdoctoral Researcher title, it is necessary to have the PhD conferred at the time of hire. Appointments made without a diploma or certified transcript indicating an earned doctorate are conditional hires and are appointed on an interim basis not to exceed 6-months. Upon verification of degree the appointment will be extended to its full duration.


    Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with artificial intelligence, such as machine leaning and deep learning, and its applications in civil engineering, as evidenced by application materials.
  • Experience with fiber-optic sensing and related applications in structural health monitoring, as evidenced by application materials.
  • Experience in fiber-reinforced polymers and their applications to reinforced concrete structures, as evidenced by application materials.
  • Experience in large-scale laboratory testing of structural components and systems, as evidenced by application materials.
  • Robust record of publications and technical presentations, as evidenced by application materials.
