Postdoctoral Research Associate I

The McNew Lab at the University of Arizona seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to conduct research on adaptations of birds to emerging disease. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work under the supervision of Dr. Sabrina McNew in the department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology The postdoctoral researcher will play a key role in advancing research on avian host–parasite interactions through a combination of fieldwork, data analysis, and team leadership.

Primary responsibilities include:

1. Field Research: Design, coordinate, and conduct field studies focusing on birds and their parasites in the Galapagos Islands. Ensure data quality and ethical standards are maintained during field activities and collaborate with an international team.
2. Mentorship and Team Management: Supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate trainees in both field and laboratory settings. Provide training in data collection protocols, field safety, laboratory techniques, and scientific writing. Foster a collaborative research environment.
3. Research Compliance: Manage aspects of research compliance, including maintaining accurate records of research permits, animal care protocols, and institutional approvals. Ensure that all research activities comply with relevant federal, state, and institutional regulations.
4. Data Analysis and Dissemination: Conduct statistical analyses and interpret data related to host-parasite dynamics. Prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and present findings at national and international conferences. Contribute to the development of grant proposals and progress reports as needed.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Biology or a related field and will be capable of leading an innovative research program, working collaboratively with an international team, and communicating effectively to academic and non-academic audiences. The researcher will additionally have opportunities to develop new and independent research avenues, build skills for academic and non-academic career paths, and receive mentorship in a positive and community-oriented environment. This is a year-to-year appointment, contingent upon funding and performance.

• Conduct high-quality research on the ecology and evolution of host-parasite interactions.
• Work independently in Arizona and Ecuador, showing initiative and the capacity to move forward large research projects.
• Contribute to a positive lab environment, including mentoring of students and participating in the departmental community.
• Participate in the growth and maintenance of a research lab.

• Present research at scientific conferences.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Written and oral proficiency in English and Spanish.

• PhD in Biology or related field by the time of hire.
• Record of peer-reviewed publications in avian disease ecology.
• Experience working with wild birds and conducting experiments using wild birds.

• Experience with ELISAs, immunology, bioinformatics, microscopy.
• Experience working in Latin America.
