Position Highlights The University of Arizona (UA) Department of Astronomy and Steward Observatory (SO) are excited to invite applications for Postdoctoral Research Associates interested in research related to geospatial data science.

As a Postdoctoral Research Associate, you will have the opportunity to work closely with renowned faculty including Dr. Kathryne Daniel, Dr. Piper Sledge, Dr. Chris Lukinbeal. You will be encouraged to integrate into the site suitability research cluster for the Cosmic Explorer team and support an equitable scholarly environment in research, mentoring, and service. Your work will focus on assisting in the development of a site suitability model, web maps, and geovisualizations for Cosmic Explorer that assists scientist’s in spatial decision making.

Throughout your postdoctoral journey with us, you will be encouraged to conduct your own independent research, as time permits, and will be able to apply for time on any Steward facility directly as a PI. You will be expected to lead high-profile, independent research in geospatial data science as well as collaborate with SO faculty and scholars in the Department of Astronomy.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop and lead an independent research agenda centered on geospatial data science; disseminate work through publications and presentations; contribute to public-engagement opportunities.
  • Develop and implement research initiatives, collaborations, publications, and/or events (e.g., talks, workshops, visitor programs, etc.) as needed and relevant to research agendas.
  • Collaborate with faculty and scholars in support of an inclusive academic environment (including organizing collaborative meetings, supervising/mentoring graduate and undergraduate students).
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Advanced Python and ArcPy programming skills.
  • Advanced v-sri software skills.
  • Advances skills in R.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have completed all the requirements for a PhD in Geography with emphasis in GIS at the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • In addition to the PhD requirement, a Master's degree in GIS is preferred.
  • Research experience relevant to the following scientific area: geospatial data science.
  • Experience with High Performance Computing.
