Position Highlights The Steel Children's Research Center within the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Arizona is seeking candidates for one full-time position of Postdoctoral Research Associate I. Research involves experiments related to discovering the pathobiology of oxidant species-induced lung injury to both neonatal and adult lung using rodent models and in vitro cell culture techniques. Allergen based asthma models are also being studied. Pathobiological aspect involves investigating the genomic, proteomic and lipidomic aspect of derangement of normal lung development inducing lung pathology and the interventions to disrupt the pathological process including pharmacotherapy.

Candidates should have a PhD, DVM, MD or MD/PhD and a strong foundation in genomics, genetic intervention techniques and immunology. Candidates with a background in lung research and experience with rodent models are of particular interest. The successful candidate will join a team working in a research field with promising clinical applications.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Design and independently execute experiments utilizing complex genetically modified mice.
  • Perform experiments with general cell culture techniques, including generation of stable cell lines using retrovirus/lentivirus- infection systems, protein expression and shRNA/siRNA-based gene knockdowns. 
  • Document and analyze generated data.
  • Prepare reports, abstracts and manuscripts for publication that describe the experiments, resulting findings and conclusions.
  • Supervise undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Assist with grants, overall laboratory management, and with development of new research directions.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: 

  • Knowledge and willingness, to work with in vivo animal models both rat and mice to study lung pathology. Maintenance and breeding of animals expected.
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD, DVM, MD or MD/PhD in Physiology, Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Research experience in Pulmonary Pathobiology and related Genomics.
  • Research experience with both animal and cell culture models.
  • Experience with fluorescent and confocal microscope and expertise in performing immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry.
  • Experience with Protein Biochemistry related to study of protein interaction such as Co-IP, Western blots and recombinant protein expression in in vitro systems.
  • Experience with techniques in molecular biology techniques including cloning of mammalian genes & gene constructs, RT PCR analysis, mRNA expression analysis, Gene deletion, GFP tagging, site directed mutagenesis, knowledge of CRISPR and yeast-based screening systems.
  • Experience with HPLC & Mass-spectrometry based analyses, Lipid profiling.
  • Experience with use of screening of microarray database for gene expression, using relevant tools.
  • Expertise with performing data analysis, including FACS data, Statistical & bioinformatics analyses: SPSS, Graph Pad.
