Position Summary
The laboratory of Dr. Steven J. Ackerman, in association with the labs of Drs. Vadim Gaponenko, Sojin Shikano and Jalees Rehman in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics in the College of Medicine at University of Illinois Chicago, is seeking a motivated post-doctoral candidate to work on the development of novel chemokine receptor biased antagonists targeting neuroinflammation, neurodegeneration and memory loss in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). We have a new grant from the Alzheimer's Drug Development Foundation (ADDF)-Harrington Foundation Scholar Award to further develop novel CCR3-targeting peptides and small molecule biased antagonists as therapeutics that inhibit neuroinflammation, an early and chronic component in the development of AD. The candidate will work on this project as well as therapeutics targeting other chemokine receptors of interest in AD pathogenesis. Links to our laboratories are as follows:

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work with Principal Investigator and Co-Investigators to develop and execute research projects.
  • Conduct independent research experiments, including data collection and analysis.
  • Test, optimize, and troubleshoot new and existing methods, techniques and models.
  • Prepare scientific results for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Communicate results at internal project meetings and external scientific conferences.
  • Assist in the training of graduate students and other research staff.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

  • Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD degree in neurobiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology or a related field.
  • At least one first authored, peer-reviewed, publication.
  • Knowledge of basic experimental design and statistics.

    Preferred Qualification
    s
    • Strong background in neurobiology, molecular biology, pharmacology and biochemistry.
    • Experience in drug development, in vitro/ex vivo cell-based and in vivo mouse models is a plus.
