Postdoctoral Researcher – Advanced Electron Microscopy of Structural Metallic Alloys

The Leonard Lab at The Ohio State University invites applications for aPostdoctoral Researcherposition focused on utilizing advanced electron microscopy techniques and mechanical testing to investigate the mechanical behavior of structural metallic alloys. We are seeking a motivated and skilled researcher with a strong background in materials characterization usingadvanced electron microscopy, including: Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Electron Back Scatter Diffraction (EBSD), Electron Channeling Contrast Imaging (ECCI), and Scanning/Transmission Electron Microscopy (S/TEM). The ideal candidate will have experience applying these techniques to understand deformation mechanisms, microstructural evolution, and failure behavior instructural metallic alloys, particularly during or after mechanical testingExperience withhexagonal close-packed (HCP)materials (e.g., titanium, magnesium, or zirconium alloys) is desirable but not required.

Required Education:
PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field

Required Experience:

  • Proven hands-on experience in both electron microscopy and fatigue testing of metals

  • Skills in in situ testing, FIB sample preparation, and image/data analysis tools (e.g., DigitalMicrograph, ImageJ, Python/Matlab) are beneficial.

  • Strong understanding of microstructure–mechanical property relationships in structural alloys.

  • Excellent communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work independently and in team environments.
