Position Overview

The University of Kansas Department of Health, Sport and Exercise Sciences invites applicants to submit applications for part-time positions as course instructors for graduate and undergraduate level courses. Amount of work required can vary by position and will range in FTE.

Candidates will be reviewed and placed in a pool for consideration as openings arise.  Applications will be accepted throughout the year and appointments will be made as needed.  Please be advised that need for lecturers varies from year to year.  All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply.  The successful applicant must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins.

Due to complex state employment laws, the University of Kansas may be unable to hire fully remote workers for this position outside of Kansas. Specifically, we cannot currently offer employment to candidates residing in the following states: California and Delaware. Job Description

100% - Teach 3-6 hours of Graduate or Undergraduate level courses in Health, Sport & Exercise Sciences programs in either:

  • Exercise Science
  • Community Health
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Sport Management

Plan and organize course to include syllabus preparation, textbook acquisition. Maintain office hours, give exams, grade exams, and maintain a grade book.


Required Qualifications

For Graduate Level Courses:  Earned terminal degree in Physical Education, Health Education, Community Health, Sport Management, Exercise Science/Physiology, Kinesiology, Athletic Training or a directly related field AND a record of research, scholarship, or achievement in the field.

For Undergraduate Level Courses:  Master's degree in Physical Education, Health Education, Community Health, Sport Management, Exercise Science/Physiology, Kinesiology, Athletic Training or a directly related field.

For Physical Activity courses (HSES 108s) and Coaching courses (e.g., Coaching Basketball), applicants must have:
1)  A Master's degree, OR
2) A Bachelor's degree in health, sport & exercise sciences or a closely related field AND five (5) or more years of applied, relevant experience (e.g., coaching the specific sport, teaching a similar course at an institution of higher education, etc.). Exceptions to this requirement are possible but must be approved individually by the Dean of SOEHS and the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs. For applicants with less than 2 years of experience a certification in the relevant physical activity discipline is required (e.g., Yoga instructor certification, Zumba certification).

This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have the foundational knowledge and skill set required to perform the duties of the position.  The level of degree is based on accreditation requirements, institutional standards of academic and professional excellence, alignment with peer institution benchmarks, and contributes to the credibility and effectiveness of the role within the university community.


Preferred Qualifications

Prior college or relevant K-12 teaching experience.
