Graduate Field Assistant and Undergraduate Program Coordinator - Temporary
The Opportunity:
This position will work collaboratively with CALS Office of Academic Programs (OAP) teams; CALS majors and departments; numerous programs and units across campus and will have an ongoing connection to other university partners engaged in student support and success.
In a team and service-oriented environment, provide a full range of high level, professional administrative support to the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) while providing guidance to graduate students and other Field faculty members. This includes interpretation, communication, and application of policy. Act as liaison between graduate students, the Graduate School, the Bursar Office, the Office of Global Learning, College Admissions and Registrar's Offices and the DGS in the Field of Computational Biology. Coordinate the graduate admissions process. Assist in recruitment activities. Represent the Field of Computational Biology at various meetings. Ensure timely student registration, especially for those students receiving aid. Create and update publications and electronic information relevant to the field including website information. Coordinate and process exam schedules, committee nominations and other relevant graduate forms for students. Work with the Graduate School regarding all new field faculty nominations, resignations, or retirements.
Provide administrative support to department faculty and teaching staff. Process travel reimbursements and initiate purchases utilizing Cornell tools and systems. Under very general direction from the Administrative Manager and Director of Undergraduate Studies, provide a broad range of administrative support for all aspects of the undergraduate concentration in Computational Biology. Partnering with the Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) and collaborating with CALS Student Services and the Office of Undergraduate Biology. Serve as primary contact person for all matters related to the undergraduate program. Coordinate and maintain the on-line Courses of Study Directory. Schedule exams through University Registrar's Office; secure rooms for classes/sections. Coordinate grade submissions. Support the student experience by fostering effective relationships with both undergraduate students and with faculty advisors. Serve as the first point of contact for current and prospective undergraduate students, responsible for answering a variety of questions from students and their families, supporting and advising current and prospective graduate students on academic requirements, course options and extracurricular opportunities.
This position is part-time (20 hours/week) and will be located in Ithaca, New York. There is the opportunity to work remotely within New York State during student breaks.
About the College, School, Unit or Department:
The Department of Computational Biology (CB) is a joint department with three participating colleges including the Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science and the College of Arts and Sciences. The department consists of eight full-time faculty members, with expertise in computer science, genomics, systems biology, population genetics, and modeling. They apply these skills to a wide range of exciting problems in the life sciences. The department administers the Computational Biology undergraduate concentration within the Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and is home to the Computational Biology PhD graduate degree program. Additionally, the faculty in the department are members of the Computational Biology graduate field, as well as several other graduate fields offering M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees.

- Demonstrated expertise with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and scheduling tools.
- Demonstrated record of successfully providing exceptional customer service.
- Experience that demonstrates creativity, reasoning, and solution-finding techniques.
- Proven experience in communicating effectively, both written and oral.
- Excellent organizational experience.
- Knowledge of how to balance conflicting priorities, make informed choices, and use sound judgment in completing urgent tasks.
- Must be flexible and receptive to new ideas and approaches. Experience in handling confidential information with utmost discretion and integrity.
- Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and well-being.
- Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

- Experience in an academic environment is preferred.
- Ability to learn Cornell student systems (Bursar, grades, course enrollments, PeopleSoft)
- Ability to learn Cornell University systems, policies, and procedures.

Hiring range for this position is $26.09 -$28.21 per hour.
