Gallery Educator Fellow

The Princeton University Art Museum welcomes applications for the position of Gallery Education Fellow. Reporting to the Senior Gallery Educator, the Gallery Education Fellow will serve as a liaison between the Museum and school audiences (grades K to 12) and with the public, affording structured education experiences in the galleries built on age-specific content and current teaching methodologies.  The Gallery Education Fellow may travel to local schools to conduct lessons in the classroom a few times per semester.  They will assist the Gallery Educator and the Senior Gallery Educator in managing group tour reservation requests. They will work a non-traditional work schedule that includes one weekend day and one evening per week: either Sunday-Thursday, including Thursday 12:00 pm - 8:00 pm, or Tuesday-Saturday, including Friday 12:00 pm - 8:00 pm.

As the Museum prepares for a dramatically reconceived new building scheduled to open in Fall 2025, the Art Museum presents three exhibitions in its downtown venue Art@Bainbridge. When the new building opens, the Art Museum will open with 32 galleries and initiate its new exhibitions program with seven annual exhibitions onsite and on tour.

  • The Gallery Education Fellow will spend half of their time facilitating interactive, learner-driven educational experiences in the galleries of the Art Museum and local K-12 classrooms.
  • The Gallery Education Fellow will work with the Gallery Educator and the Senior Gallery Educator to learn about the objects in the Museum's collections and to learn the skills and techniques needed to provide interactive, learner-driven educational experiences that emphasize critical thinking and close looking skills. They will need to spend a few hours each week preparing for their tours.
  • The Gallery Education Fellow will be responsible for managing group reservations and communication with group leaders. They will work with the Gallery Education Team to ensure that all group reservations are clarified, confirmed, and assigned to an Educator or a docent in a timely and efficient manner. They will be expected to provide the highest level of service and to ensure that all visitors feel welcome, know what to expect, and have what they need to enjoy their visit.
  • The Gallery Education Fellows will provide tours and facilitate interactive gallery experiences for visitors during some Museum events. They will connect with peers from other institutions who are working on gallery education initiatives to share challenges and progress.

 



Preferred Requirements

  • Familiarity with strategies for engagement and interpretation for adult audiences
  • Development of interactive learning experiences for adult audiences
  • Demonstrated interest in museums, art, and their potential to engage with adult audiences
  • Experience with object-based teaching or facilitating close-looking exercises
  • Teaching certificate and/or classroom teaching experience
  • The ability to speak more than one language

Essential Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree – within 3 years of graduation
  • One year of related work experience, entry-level position 
  • Experience teaching K-12 students in a museum or classroom setting.
  • Experience developing interactive learning experiences for K-12 audiences.
  • Demonstrated interest in museums, art, and their potential to engage with K-12 audiences
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills; diplomatic attitude
  • Demonstrated ability to be nimble and to work as a team player on mutual goals
  • Experience managing or working on multiple projects, collaboratively
  • Attention to detail and excellent organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to take the initiative, problem-solve, and work independently 
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes one weekend day and one evening per week: either Sunday-Thursday, including Thursday 12:00 pm - 8:00 pm, or Tuesday-Saturday, including Friday 12:00 pm - 8:00 pm.
