External Affairs and Communications Manager
Newcomb Art Museum of Tulane
Location:  New Orleans, LA
Summary
Reporting to the Director of the Newcomb Art Museum, the External Affairs and Communications Manager is responsible for planning and implementing a wide range of initiatives that maximize the museum’s external affairs [marketing/branding] and development efforts. The position works closely with the Director to coordinate and advance the museum’s fundraising and external communication activities including: marketing and public relations, website development, print and online publishing, donor cultivation and stewardship, special event management, and grant writing. In the absence of the director, the position is charged with day-to-day leadership decisions. The External Affairs Manager also supervises the Financial Services and Membership Associate and work-study employees, provides departmental direction toward optimal productivity, and works with all staff on general museum events and business.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Excellent leadership and management skills.
• Exemplary interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
• Ability to cultivate positive, productive working relationships with all levels of internal and external constituents.
• Ability to officially represent the Director and Museum as required.
• Proficiency with computers in standardized word processing, spreadsheet programs, and graphic design programs.
• Ability to move projects forward, working both independently and collaboratively.
• Highly flexible and innovative thinking with excellent multi-tasking skills and a careful attention to detail.
• Working knowledge of fundraising and donor management software applications preferred.
• Expertise in writing for publication and developing content for internal and external museum documents using prescribed format and conforming to rules of grammar and diction.
• Experience with budgeting and fiscal management.
• Ability to network actively in the local community to enhance development objectives .
• Ability to effectively represent the Director and the Museum to diverse constituencies.
• Availability to travel, work evenings and / or weekends as necessary in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
Required Education and/or Experience
• Master’s Degree.
• Three (3) years’ external communications and fundraising experience
OR
• Bachelor’s Degree/Equivalent and five (5) years’ external communications and fundraising experience.
Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor’s Degree in English, Art History, or Communications and three (3) or more years’ museum external communications and fundraising experience.
• Demonstrated success with marketing and messaging campaigns using social media and other online tools, as well as traditional media platforms.
• Demonstrated success in grant and proposal writing.
Compensation Information
This position is classified as "exempt, salaried" and is assigned to pay grade 26.
