Job Summary
The Department of Botany and Plant Pathology invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 9-month, tenure-track or tenured Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor position.

The primary responsibilities of this 9-month 1.0 FTE tenure track or tenured position are to direct the Oregon State University Herbarium; establish and sustain an independent research program by conducting original research in an area of plant systematics, ecology, and evolution through external funding, publishing original research in peer-reviewed journals; teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels; mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, postdocs and other lab personnel; and providing institutional and professional service including service related to interdisciplinary scholarship, student success, and diversity. We are especially interested in candidates with research programs that combine field research with state-of-the-art genomics and evolutionary biology.
In addition to the 9-month 1.0 FTE position, the leadership role at the Oregon State University Herbarium continues through the summer months, and this is accounted for through a separate summer appointment.
The Botany and Plant Pathology faculty consists of 26 tenure-track professors, 2 professors of practice, 9 courtesy professors, 8 senior research professors, 6 instructors, and 2 advisors, and trains ~400 undergraduate majors (Botany and Biological Data Sciences), ~45 graduate students (Botany & Plant Pathology) and ~50 postdocs, faculty research assistants and research associates. Research interests encompass studies in the ecology, evolution and organismal biology, plant development and function, plant pathology, plant-microbe interactions, and biological data sciences. Key Responsibilities
30% Research and Scholarship
  • Maintain an externally funded research program conducting original and independent research in plant systematics, ecology, and evolution that is relevant to the missions of the department, college, and university.
  • Aspire to maintain and enhance national and international standing, in part through collaborative research projects with colleagues at OSU, nationally, and/or internationally.
  • Scholarship and creative activities include, but are not limited to, peer-reviewed publications of scientific research, development of scientific technologies/methodologies, integration of knowledge leading to new interpretations, presentations at regional, national, and international conferences, and participation on steering committees, agency panels, and science working groups where the outcome is a fundamental change in the field’s direction. Innovation in teaching strategies and development of new educational approaches may be included.
  • Serve as an investigator on a USDA-NIFA Hatch collaborative or Hatch multistate project.

25% Director of Oregon State University Herbarium
Oversight of the Oregon State University Herbarium (OSC), including – but not limited to:
  • Work closely with OSC plant and fungal curators to review and implement policies and procedures to ensure proper functioning of OSC.
  • Seek external funding from state, federal and/or private funding sources to support the growth and maintenance of OSC.
  • Set priorities and provide guidance to OSC collection manager/curator of plants
  • Supervise undergraduate and graduate students working in OSC plant collection.
  • Develop and expand research and outreach capacities to increase the visibility of OSC.
  • Implement digital data curation strategies using modern platforms

25% Teaching
  • Primary responsibility for two courses per year at the undergraduate and/or graduate level in Botany and Plant Pathology, Biology, Biological Data Sciences, or related program.
  • Participate in graduate or undergraduate level seminars, workshops, guest lectures, and/or discussion groups as appropriate.

10% Mentoring, Advising, and Supervision
  • Mentor and serve as research advisor to graduate students in their advanced degree programs in Botany and Plant Pathology, or related programs
  • Train and supervise personnel in conducting research at the undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral, and/or faculty research assistant levels.

10% Service
  • All faculty are expected to be collegial members of their units, and to perform appropriate service that contributes to the effectiveness of their departments, colleges, and the University, and their professions.
  • University service includes serving on the departmental, interdepartmental, program, college, and University committees, and serving the University-wide community of bioscience researchers including organizing workshops or assisting with development of community resources.
  • Professional service includes, but is not limited to, reviewing manuscripts for journals and proposals for funding agencies, and involvement in professional organizations.
What You Will Need
Assistant Professor
  • Ph.D. in Botany, Plant Biology, Biology, or related field.
  • Significant potential to obtain external research funding.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to scholarly activities through refereed publications in, or relevant to, plant systematics, ecology, and/or evolution.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate plant biodiversity topics to varied audiences.
  • Significant potential to be effective in teaching.

Associate Professor (in addition to above)
  • Current minimum rank of Assistant Professor in a tenure-track, or comparable, position.
  • Publication record consistent with national reputation in plant systematics, ecology, and/or evolution.
  • Demonstrable proficiency in obtaining external research funding.
  • Successful mentoring of graduate student and/or postdoc.

Professor (in addition to above)
  • Current minimum rank of Associate Professor in a tenured, or comparable, position.
  • Publication record consistent with an international reputation in plant systematics, ecology, and/or evolution.
  • Sustained record of proficiency in obtaining external research funding.
  • Successful mentoring and graduation of graduate students and/or completion of postdocs.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
What We Would Like You to Have
Assistant Professor
  • Relevant postdoctoral or postgraduate experience.
