Job Description:

The ASPIRE Oneonta Counselor position at SUNY Oneonta is a great opportunity to work in our Access and Opportunity Program, advancing the mission of the University and promoting academic excellence. We highly encourage applicants to apply for this wonderful opportunity, where you will provide academic, career, financial, and personal counseling to a caseload of ACE students. This is a full-time position with standard office hours from Monday to Friday. Occasionally, you may be required to work on weekends, evenings, or holidays.

The ASPIRE counselor is a professional educator who will share responsibility for creating an environment where students are appreciated, supported, and encouraged to excel. ASPIRE Oneonta is an academic and personal support program that serves 25-30 socioeconomically disadvantaged and first-generation students. You will assist with and provide comprehensive services and support to first-year, first-generation university students from New York State who face academic and financial challenges. The program includes a month-long Summer Academy where students make friends, become familiar with the campus, and prepare for a successful transition to university.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide personal, academic, career, social, and financial advising for students
  • Instruct courses related to student development and success
  • Assist with the AOP program's residential life or coordinating academic support services for a pre-freshman summer bridge program
  • Assist with reviewing admissions applications for ASPIRE
  • Work with interns or student staff, and development and coordination of student programming, as well as collaboration with other departments and committees.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • A valid driver's license
  • Competence in Microsoft Office applications
  • Effective written communication and presentation skills
  • Experience providing personal, academic, financial, or career counseling to students

Preferred:

  • Master's degree
  • Experience working in higher education
  • Experience conducting admissions application review
  • Demonstration of ability to plan and execute successful student programs
  • Experience working in programs that serve socio-economically disadvantaged students
  • Experience utilizing higher education computer applications such as Banner, SLATE, and Degree Works
  • Bilingual skills in Spanish preferred
  • Experience working with and serving diverse populations
