Liberal Studies at New York University is seeking a part-time science instructor to teach at least one section of History of the Universe in AY 2024-25. Successful candidates will be contacted on an as-needed basis to fill section openings in the Liberal Studies Core, if and when such openings arise.
Liberal Studies provides a unique interdisciplinary educational experience to undergraduate students. The Liberal Studies Core consists of a two-year interdisciplinary global curriculum drawing on great works across civilizations. The Global Liberal Studies Bachelor of Arts, one of NYU?s premier liberal arts degrees, builds on the global core with an upper division interdisciplinary set of concentrations that direct students toward different areas of global study.
Students in History of the Universe examine the nature of science as a way of looking at the world and study that world as revealed through the work of scientists over the years. They learn about the nature of matter and energy and about how the universe has changed over billions of years. Topics include the origin and development of stars, galaxies, planetary systems, and the universe itself, as well as study of the earth and the development of life on earth and its potential to exist elsewhere in the universe.
The course introduces students to the historical development of astronomy as the "first science", at multiple locations around the pre-modern world. In addition to highlighting the contributions of various thinkers to the concept of the scientific method, students critique the role of human culture and biases in the development and history of astronomy. Students will explore the frontiers of knowledge of astronomy, and acquire an appreciation for the value of multinational collaboration in present-day science.
In compliance with NYC?s Pay Transparency Act, the contact hour rate for this position is $214.24. This rate is based on the collective bargaining agreement with Local 7902.
Classes meet twice weekly, for 75 minutes per class session. Adjunct faculty candidates should have a PhD in an environmental or biological science and at least one year of college-level teaching experience, though senior graduate students (ABD) will be considered.
All applications must be submitted through Interfolio at http://apply.interfolio.com/129088, and include ONLY (1) a cover letter; (2) a current C.V.; and (3) a Diversity and Inclusion Statement addressing past and/or potential future contributions to diversity through teaching, professional activity, and/or service (additional information can be found here http://as.nyu.edu/departments/facultydiversity/recruitment/diversity-statements.html ).
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Interviews to commence as soon as possible.
