The Department of Practical Theology offers a postdoctoral position in the field of Pastoral Theology. The position comprises 40 hours/week (100%) and is to be filled as of 1. November 2025.

Your future workplace will be the Department of Practical Theology, which is part of the Faculty of Catholic Theology and covers the fields of Pastoral Theology and Religious Pedagogics and Catechetics. The Department of Practical Theology and its staff have a special academic interest in social developments and their challenges for theology, church, politics and education. Therefore, the Department of Practical Theology is intensively involved at the interface between practical theology and values research.
This interface is also the focus of the advertised position: The research focuses on values and attitudes in Austria and Europe and the contributions to the debate on values in society and the church that can be derived from them. To achieve this, it is essential to further develop the scientific discourse on values in an appropriate manner, involving various disciplines. To this purpose, the Department of Practical Theology cooperates with several faculties of the University of Vienna within the "Interdisciplinary Values Research Network". The advertised position therefore offers you the opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary and internationally oriented team.
Your future tasks:
You will be actively involved in research, teaching and administration, i.e.:
- You (further) develop an independent research profile in the areas of pastoral theology and values research.
- You are involved in research projects and scientific surveys.
- You prepare and complete a habilitation thesis.
- You publish nationally and internationally and give lectures.
- You are involved in the coordination of the "Interdisciplinary Values Research Network".
- You apply for projects and raise third-party funds.
- You teach classes independently and supervise students.
- You are involved in evaluation measures and quality management.
- You take on appropriate administrative tasks at the Department.

- completed doctoral/PhD studies in Catholic theology
- scientific knowledge in the field of social sciences
- a successful dissertation with a focus on the above-mentioned research areas
- proven research competence through publications
- good IT user skills and knowledge of social science analysis software
- good written and spoken English language skills
- excellent German language skills
Further desirable qualities are...
- experience in research management
- didactic skills / experience in e-learning
- willingness to get involved in teamwork
- know-how in the area of university procedures and structures
