This post is for a full-time Research Assistant in the laboratory of Professor Steve Jackson (https://www.stevejacksonlab.org/ ) based in the internationally renowned Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute, located on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, Cambridge, UK.
The postholder will work closely alongside a postdoctoral research associate, Dr. Aldo Bader, to assist with several on-going projects in the lab. This work will explore the molecular mechanisms of DNA damage responses and mutagenesis, and how sensitivity and resistance arise in different cancer cells and genetic backgrounds in response to ionising radiation and clinically relevant drugs. A strong focus of this research is to study the specific functions of key DNA repair enzymes in high detail, how they function as a network to facilitate efficient DNA repair, and particularly, how this impacts mutagenesis.
The postholder will assist with a variety of molecular biology experiments to identify and characterise DNA damage response mechanisms. This will require the application of a range of techniques, from in-vitro biochemistry to novel, next-generation sequencing approaches. Most skills can be acquired and developed throughout the post, offering a good opportunity for the postholder to develop their skills; however, experience in mammalian tissue culture is essential, and experience in other techniques would be desirable.
The post holder will be required to take on other responsibilities, including preparation of reagents, maintenance of lab stocks and assisting in the day-to-day running of the laboratory.
The successful candidate should show initiative and independent thinking, possess excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently and as a part of a vibrant and diverse team.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.
Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a basic disclosure (criminal records check) check and a security check.
