We are recruiting two postdoctoral research associates with expertise in mass spectrometry-based protein analysis.
You will be embedded in a larger team with another PDRA and a PhD, fully funded by grants from the Royal Society Wolfson Foundation and Academy of Medical Sciences. This team will work collaboratively to investigate age-related changes in human tissue by integrating proteomics and scRNA-seq data.
For the duration of the project, you will be supported by a highly experienced PDRA specialising in mass spectrometry and data analysis, who will assist in overseeing daily operations. Throughout the duration of the project, weekly full-team meetings will be held to ensure coordination, maintain momentum, and address any potential bottlenecks proactively.
The work revolves around the important topic of healthy aging. By 2030 it is estimated that 17% of the global population will be over the age of 65, which is expected to double by 2050. Ageing is accompanied by structural and functional deterioration, much of which stems from cumulative cellular damage and chronic inflammation¿factors that significantly increase the risk of life-threatening diseases such as cancer. Respiratory diseases alone for example affect 1 in 5 people in the UK and are the third leading cause of death. This issue is especially severe in North West England, where lung-related mortality rates are among the highest nationally, contributing significantly to an annual healthcare cost of £11 billion across the UK. By applying advanced mass spectrometry-based proteomics approaches to study the effect of aging on tissue directly, this project aims to uncover not only the molecular changes but also to locate therapeutic targets that can be leveraged to develop new treatments that promote healthy aging.
These posts are offered on a fixed term basis for 35 or 36 months from appointment.
You will have a PhD (or about to obtain) in biochemistry, chemistry, cell signalling or related discipline.
These roles are eligible for sponsorship under the skilled worker route
If you are still awaiting your PhD to be awarded you will be appointed at Grade 6, spine point 30. Upon written confirmation that you have been awarded your PhD, your salary will be increased to Grade 7, spine point 31.
