About the role
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Postdoctoral Research Associate in Mass Spectrometry and Structural Glycobiology to work under the supervision of Prof. Weston Struwe for a period of 24 months. The project, funded by the UKRI, centres on developing advanced methods for structural characterisation of glycoproteins using trapped ion mobility spectrometry and ion activation strategies (e.g. EID and photo-dissociation). The project will entail improving the current capability of glycoprotein structural analysis using bottom-up mass spectrometry. The project will also include developing and applying applications in glycomics and native MS. Our goal is to characterise the structure of complex biological oligosaccharides and their site of attachment on fusion glycoprotein complexes isolated from viral surfaces (e.g. dengue and HIV-1). We are looking for a highly motivated researcher, ideally with experience in biological mass spectrometry, glycobiology and ion activation methods.
The postholder will be part of the new Kavli Institute for NanoScience Discovery – an exciting multidisciplinary research centre comprised of research groups from several University of Oxford Departments including Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, Pathology, Physiology and Engineering (https://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2020-12-03-10-million-gift-new-nanoscience-institute-oxford ).
The successful candidate will work with the wider team in the Struwe Lab, contribute to the development of new research areas, present their research findings at international conferences and learn advanced methods in mass spectrometry and glycobiology – all with an emphasis on career development and research independence.
This full-time fixed-term post is funded by the UKRI for up to 2 years.
The actual starting salary offered will be based on qualifications and relevant skills acquired and will also be determined by the funding available.
The post will be based in the Department of Chemistry, Kavli Institute for NanoScience Discovery and is available from October 1st, 2025.
About you
Applicants must hold a PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry or a relevant subject area, (or be close to completion) prior to taking up your appointment. The research requires experience in bottom-up mass spectrometry, glycoproteomics and/or glycomics methods. You will be expected to manage your own academic research and administrative activities. This involves small scale project management, to co-ordinate multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines.
Application Process
Applications for this vacancy are to be made online via www.recruit.ox.ac.uk and Vacancy ID 180710. You will be required to upload your curriculum vitae and a supporting statement, setting out how you meet the selection criteria for the post, using examples of your skills and experience.
