100%, Zurich, fixed-term
The Laboratory of Ecosystems and Landscape Evolution at the ETH Zurich is looking for candidates to fill a post-doctoral position as part of the fully funded SNFS Consolidator project “Burgeon” aiming at understanding the connection between tectono-geomorphic processes and the origination of biodiversity. The Laboratory of Ecosystem and Landscape Evolution is an international research team with diverse scientific expertise and backgrounds, connected by the goal to understand biodiversity. We study the mechanisms that shape biodiversity patterns across spatial and temporal scales - in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, their origination and their response to global changes. To make these connections, we collect data through environmental DNA methods, remote sensing, and field sampling, and use these data to answer questions with statistical and process-based models.
Project background
We are inviting applicants for a postdoctoral position, starting as soon as possible but ideally in April/May 2025, to work on the tectono-geomorphic rates and processes driving species origination in global mountains. The research will specifically focus on three regions characterized by high levels of endemism and geomorphic disequilibrium: the Northern Andes of Colombia, Mexico, and the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. New field sampling methodology applied to these areas will provide a unique opportunity to analyze how geological and climatic processes drive speciation and shape both regional and global biodiversity. The project will involve mapping and characterizing tectono-geological processes associated with mountain plant diversity (e.g. GPS or DEM-based analyses); expanding our scope by using process-based models (i.e. DAC) to establish broader response functions between landscape change and speciation; integrating plate movement data (through tools such as GPlates) to understand how tectonic and geomorphic deformation influence paleogeography and paleotopography; and incorporating these insights into a global, process-based model to predict diversity dynamics, including periods of rapid diversification, equilibria or diversity erosion. We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with a strong background geology/geomorphology, or a related discipline, a strong interest for evolutionary biology, and who is interested in bridging field data, computational modeling, and large-scale analyses. Experience with geospatial analysis, programming, or modeling (e.g., Julia) is highly desirable. If you are passionate about uncovering how Earth’s dynamic processes shape life, we encourage you to apply.
Job description
You will work in a network of international partners across Europe and North, Central and South America. You will work together with graduate students, and senior scientists to develop new tools for tectono-geomorphic characterisation, landscape modelling and establish connections with biodiversity dynamics.
The position is initially for 12 months and extendable based on progress and evaluation of performance for up to a maximum of 36 months.
Profile
You are a highly motivated candidate with a strong background geology/geomorphology, or a related discipline, a strong interest for evolutionary biology, interested in bridging field data, computational modeling, and large-scale analyses, with the following expertise:
- Strong background in geology or geomorphology, particularly in tectono-geomorphic characterisation, modelling and possible connections with biodiversity
- Proficency in programming (e.g. Julia)
- Proficiency in geospatial analysis, with experience in tools such as GPlates, DAC, GIS for DEM analyses, or related software
- Some experience in field-based geological methods (e.g., sampling, sediment analysis) or willingness to develop these skills
- Ability to integrate concepts from multiple scientific fields, bridging geological and biological research
- Excellent communication and writing skills in english, with a strong attitude toward collaboration in multidisciplinary teams
