Position description

As a Student Research Assistant at MDU, you will support the early stages of a collaborative project between Mälardalen University (MDU), Eskilstuna Municipality, and Wavin. The project aims to investigate the feasibility and implementation of a bubble barrier system in the Eskilstuna River to prevent plastic waste from continuing downstream. Main duties include conducting a literature review, performing basic engineering calculations (flow and pressure drop in perforated pipes, estimation of air demand), assisting in preliminary system design, and supporting simple numerical simulations. The role also involves documenting findings, preparing summary reports, and participating in meetings with academic and external partners. Depending on your interests and the needs of the project, you may also contribute to basic laboratory experiments. Supervision and support will be provided by academic staff at MDU.

Qualifications

To be eligible for employment as a Student Research Assistant (Teaching Assistant), you must be admitted to studies at the first or second cycle at MDU.

We are looking for a motivated and curious student, preferably with an educational background in energy, engineering, or a related field. Applicants should have a basic understanding of fluid mechanics and mass transfer, and an interest in applying this knowledge to practical environmental challenges. Familiarity with MATLAB or similar simulation tools is desirable, but a willingness to learn is equally valued. The ability to work independently, take initiative, and communicate results clearly, both verbally and in writing are important. The working language can be Swedish or English.

Additional merits include previous experience with laboratory work, technical projects, or participation in student engineering teams. Prior exposure to pipe flow, compressed air systems, or environmental technology will be considered an advantage.

In an overall assessment of suitability, emphasis is also placed on personal abilities. All employees at MDU are expected to cooperate and treat colleagues and students with respect, take responsibility for the organisation and their own work duties and contribute to a positive work environment.

Personal Qualities

Strong communication skills and the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team are essential.

We value qualities that contribute to improving the age and gender balance as well as ethnic and cultural diversity at the university.
