Postdoctoral fellow in Cancer Diagnostics and Tumor Biology

Updated: 13 days ago
Location: Vastra Frolunda, VASTRA GOTALAND
Job Type: FullTime

The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell – what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them. The Institute is composed of the following four departments:

  • The Department of Infectious Diseases
  • The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
  • The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
  • The Department of Laboratory Medicine

At present, the institute has about 340 employees and approximately 450 million SEK in total assets.

This open postdoc position is in association with Professor Anders Ståhlberg’s research group at Sahlgrenska Center Research for Cancer. Our long-term goal is early cancer detection and to personalize the treatment of each patient. Additional information about the research group: https://www.gu.se/en/research/anders-stahlberg

Subject area

Cancer diagnostics and tumor biology

  Subject area description

This project aims to develop and use next generation cancer diagnostics by analyzing biomarkers in liquid biopsies, especially blood. The project focuses on sarcomas, but we have interest in most cancer types. The analyses include cell-free RNA and tumor-DNA, immune cells and proteins. Our research is in close collaboration with academy, health care and industry both nationally and internationally.

Duties

Within this project you will plan, design and perform research activities aimed at developing and using biomarker analysis in blood samples for next generation cancer diagnostics. The work will also include studies in basic tumor biology,  where we use various in vitro and in vivo model systems, applying multiple omics methods. You will be working with clinical samples, method development and several molecular biology techniques, especially PCR and sequencing as well as with experimental data. A suitable candidate may focus on a specific expertise, such as bioinformatics. The main work will concentrate around sarcomas, but our solutions are generic and may be applied to any cancer type. The work also includes project management, supervision, communicate research data in oral presentations as well as in written reports. Interactions with other academic and industrial collaborators are also included.

  Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.

To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree, a doctoral degree in art or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made.

In the first instance, those who have completed their degree no more than three years prior to the end of the application period shall be considered. Those who have completed their degree more than three years prior to the end of the application period may also be considered in the first instance if special grounds exist. Special grounds relate to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, commissions of trust within union organisations, service within the defence services or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area.

We are looking for an ambitious and service-oriented team player. Suitable background is molecular biology and/or bioinformatics. Experience in DNA-based techniques, such as PCR and sequencing as well as bioinformatics, is considered a merit. Ability to work under pressure and in a team, organizational skills and good knowledge in English, both in speech and writing, is essential. Hence, we are looking for an enthusiastic person, who will lead and develop innovative projects within a research team. A candidate should have a strong desire to help other researchers in their work, but also the motivation to work independently. A successful candidate will be able to develop their own research line.

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Employment

The employment is full time and temporary, two years with the possibility of one year's extension, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
