Join us for an exciting and excellent postdoc research journey to create the future of Al electronics and battery cooling!
About us
The Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience - MC2 conducts research and education with a focus on wireless electronics, photonics, quantum technology, as well as bioelectronics and microelectronics packaging and integration within Chalmers University of Technology. MC2 houses a cleanroom for micro- and nanofabrication with the latest equipments. Our work is often done in close collaboration with Swedish and international partners within academia, industry and society. With unique research expertise, we offer education at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as within our international master's programs.
The Electronics Materials and Systems Laboratory focuses on the development of new materials and processes for electronics packaging and bioelectronics applications. The research of the electronics packaging group in the Electronics Materials and Systems Laboratory is addressing thermal management and advanced packaging, mainly by manipulating nanomaterials and compositions to reach maximum thermal, electrical or mechanical performance. The group has a long track record of industrial and academic collaboration globally and has published a large number of papers on 2D materials in Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, Carbon, Small, and IEEE Electron Device Letters and IEEE Transactions on Component Packaging and Manufacturing Technology.
About the research project
We aim to develop a completely new 2D hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)-based thermal interface material in this project. The hBN material offers high thermal transfer performance while providing electrical insulation for AI booted electronics and battery cooling in electric vehicle applications.
Scientifically, the following parts will be included in the research:
a) Fabrication and optimization of large-scale hBN films of high quality with high in-plane thermal conductivity
b) Development of hBN thermal interface material that combines a high degree of compressibility and recovery
c) Modeling, simulation and characterization of phonon transfer across such nanoscale interfaces.
The work will be conducted in collaboration with industrial partners in Sweden and globally, primarily with the Chalmers Vinnova 2D Tech center. The research work will also include thermal and materials characterization including using RAMAN, FTIR, DSC, DMA, TGA, LFA and 3-Omega measurement methods etc.
We seek candidates with the following qualifications:
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree in chemical engineering, materials engineering, thermal engineering or mechanics, awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.
* The date shown in your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as this is the date you have met all requirements for the doctoral degree. Exceptions from the 3-year limit can be made for longer periods resulting from parental leave, sick leave or military service.
The following experience will strengthen your application:
- Background in strong materials characterization and modelling capacity
What you will do
You will be modeling, manufacturing and characterizing 2D materials, including hBN, for thermal management applications, especially regarding nanochannel fluid flow, mechanical reliability, and immersion cooling behaviour.
Your major responsibility as a postdoc is to perform your own research in a research group. The position may also include teaching at the undergraduate and master's levels, as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to some extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large.
The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia, industry, or the public sector.
