Position description
As a university lecturer, your main role is within teaching, which also involves supervision, examination, course evaluation, and course development. Collaboration is an integral part of the university's research and educational mission, and as a university lecturer, you will actively contribute to the university's development work. The tasks also include general administration and professional development, as well as participating in daily operations related to the division, our programs, and the engineering subject.
The main task consists of teaching in the subject of environmental engineering, primarily at the BSc level. This includes conducting lectures, seminars, design and grading of assignments, written and oral exams. The position also includes responsibilities for for courses and managing these in our digital learning platform Canvas. The goal is for this person to also become active as a program coordinator and follow students and their progression throughout our programs.
Qualifications requirements
The qualification requirements for appointment as a Lecturer at Mälardalen University are a Master’s degree or equivalent competence, as well as documented teaching skills.
Teaching skills shall be well documented in such a way that their quality can also be assessed.
In order to be employed as a teacher at MDU, training in higher education teaching and learning, or equivalent acquired knowledge, is required. A person appointed as a Lecturer but lacking training in higher education teaching and learning will be offered in-house training within two and a half years. The course in higher education teaching and learning at Mälardalen University corresponds to ten weeks of training.
In addition to the established basic eligibility requirements, according to the Appointment Regulations for MDU, some additional requirements apply to this position.
We are looking for a person with:
- A MSc engineering degree in chemistry or environmental technology. Alternatively,
- A high school (gymnasium) teacher education with a focus on natural sciences with several years of experience teaching in a natural science or technical program at the high school level. Alternatively,
- A related field, or equivalent knowledge acquired through work experience.
- Knowledge and competence to teach courses in environmental technology at a university engineering program.
- Teaching experience.
- Excellent knowledge of English, both spoken and written.
Assessment criteria
The assessment criteria will be based partly on the degree of skill required for the position and partly on the ability and suitability otherwise required to carry out the work duties.
In addition to the established basic assessment criteria, according to the Appointment Regulations for Mälardalen University, there are also some other criteria that apply to this position.
Meritorious:
- Having worked as a high school teacher in natural sciences (e.g., chemistry, environmental engineering) in a natural science and/or technical programs.
- Having industry experience and/or practical experience in environmental technology or related areas, in Sweden and/or internationally. For example, environmentally related work at County Administrative Boards or the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency or similar.
- Having the ability to collaborate with the surrounding community (organizations, industry).
- Being well-versed in various teaching methods and having experience in developing both educational plans and courses.
- Having experience with distance education conducted via digital learning platforms, and experience with digital tools that facilitates learning.
- Having competence in planning and conducting laboratory experiments and/or practical work.
- Having knowledge of the Swedish language, both written and spoken.

We are looking for someone who has a creative and forward-looking approach to education and research, with enthusiasm for contributing to the development of a groundbreaking educational program in environmental technology.
Furthermore, you are communicative and have the ability to explain complex things in various ways, so that people with different learning capacities can acquire knowledge. You have good skills in various presentation techniques. You handle several programs and tools in the Office package, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
