Āu Mahi | What You Will Do
You will work a permanent night shift (7pm - 7am) on a four-on-four off shift pattern across our two Ilam campuses. As a Campus Patrol Officer, you will play a critical role in ensuring building security and the safety and well-being of all members of the University community. Your focus will be on providing security with a strong emphasis on empathy, understanding, and a people-centred approach.
Key Responsibilities
Ensure building security by checking doors, windows, and gates; monitor closed buildings for unauthorized access.
- Patrol designated areas to maintain the safety and security of staff, students, and visitors, either on foot or via specialized vehicle.
- Stay alert to potential threats or unauthorized persons and take appropriate action, collaborating with the Campus Security Officer (CSO) and Police as needed.
- Conduct routine checks on emergency towers, streetlights, and security equipment, reporting any issues promptly.
- Provide escort services to staff, students, and visitors, offering assistance such as lockout services, jump-starts, and general information
- Assist with transportation of university employees and students as needed, using a University vehicle.
- Maintain clear and efficient communication within the security team and ensure appropriate use of security equipment.
- Respond promptly to emergencies, ensuring the safety of all individuals and following University procedures.
- Participate in emergency preparedness training and contribute to campus drills and exercises.
- Help control campus events to ensure public safety and respond to alarm activations and medical emergencies when needed.

You will be an experienced security professional with:
- Empathy and Customer Service Focus: You are committed to delivering exceptional service, offering support in every interaction, whether it's during routine patrols or emergency situations.
- Excellent Communication Skills: Your ability to connect with diverse people, listen actively, and provide assistance in a compassionate manner is crucial.
- Problem-Solving: You possess the ability to handle a variety of situations and prioritise tasks.
- First Aid Certified or Willing to Learn: Your ability to act quickly and calmly in emergencies is essential.
- Organizational Skills: You can effectively manage multiple priorities, maintain accurate logs and reports, and stay organized during high-pressure situations.
- Must hold a full drivers license
- A minimum of 2-3 years' experience in security or a customer service role, preferably in a medium to large organization.
- A commitment to upholding safety protocols and creating a supportive campus environment.
- NCEA 2/Sixth Form Certificate (NZQA Level 2) or equivalent industry experience

Mahi Ngātahi | Who You Will Work With
UC is made up of approximately 150 buildings across 87 hectares, covering a gross floor area of 223,000m2 The UC Security team provide a comprehensive 24-hour, 7 day a week security service across the UC campuses. You will report to the Security Manager and work closely with the wider Facilities Management and People and Culture teams.
