Job Description
The Geology and Sustainable Mining Institute (GSMI) of the University Mohammed VI Polytechnic (UM6P) invites applications for a 24-month postdoc position in geochemistry with a particular emphasis on the Upper Cretaceous-Paleogene marine sedimentary sequences in Morocco. We are especially interested in candidates with research interests in sedimentary geochemistry, sedimentology, and georesources.
The successful candidate will contribute to a multidisciplinary research program aiming to advance our understanding of the geochemical processes governing the formation, enrichment, and preservation of sedimentary phosphate deposits and associated sediments. A particular emphasis will be placed on the distribution, speciation, and enrichment mechanisms of strategically important trace elements (e.g., rare earth elements, uranium) within phosphatic rocks and their interbedded layers. The outcomes of this research would provide essential baseline data for the potential valorization of phosphate-related resources in the context of the global energy transition.
Key research themes will include:
- Characterize the distribution, mineralogical hosts, and geochemical speciation of strategic trace elements within phosphorites and their host sequences.
- Investigate the paleoenvironmental controls, including redox conditions, productivity, and sedimentation rates, that influenced phosphate formation and trace element accumulation.
- Study early diagenetic processes, such as microbial activity and mineral replacement, which govern the mobility and fixation of trace elements.
The position involves conducting fieldwork, as well as applying multiscale analytical approaches, including petrography, mineralogical characterization, and bulk and in-situ geochemical analyses.
The position is open to candidates holding a Ph.D. degree in Geology, Earth Sciences, or a related field with a focus on sedimentology and geochemistry.
Applications must be submitted ,with all documents attached in a single file or zipped in a single folder with the mention ‘ Geochemistry’ in the subject.
Required documents include:
- Application letter;
- Curriculum Vitae;
- List of publications;
- Contact details for two reference persons;
- Other documents that the candidate considers important for the recruitment process.
The applications will be reviewed by a scientific committee. The selection board will decide from among the eligible applicants those who will be invited to attend an interview
