Established in 2011, the UNESCO Chair in Human Rights has a broad mission to promote teaching, research, and public outreach activities in the area of human rights. Assuming a distinctive role within the University, in relation to national society, and through international connections, the Chair acts as a bridgebuilder between research and policy-making, academia and civil society, local communities and the private sector.

The successful candidate will join Professor Robert Harmsen in supporting the full range of the Chair’s activities. The postdoctoral researcher will also have the scope to pursue an individual research agenda in a relevant area. Research interests focusing on one or more of the following areas are particularly welcome: 1). The United Nations human rights system and its main constituent entities; 2). The major regional systems (European, Interamerican, African) for the protection of human rights; and/or 3). Issues of academic freedom and the development of regional/international instruments for its protection.


Key responsibilities:

  • Assume a major role in the conceptualisation and organisation of the Chair’s public outreach and wider educational activities
  • Contribute to the completion of a research project on the place of human rights in national (Luxembourgish) foreign policy
  • Pursue an individual research agenda in an area related to the main centres of interest of the Chair, leading to scholarly publications and international conference presentations
  • Undertake teaching at the Bachelor’s and Master’s level, contributing to the delivery of interdisciplinary courses on human rights
