In a joint appointment with the Thuringian State Observatory (= Thüringer Landessternwarte, TLS) Friedrich Schiller University Jena invites applications for a
W3 or W2 with tenure track to W3 professorship for Astrophysics
at the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy to be filled in accordance with the Berlin Model at the next possible date.
The person to be appointed (m/f/o) should have an outstanding international reputation in Astrophysics. An excellent research profile at the interfaces of astronomical observations with substantial experience in the use of large telescopes, advanced analysis of large datasets, or the modelling of astrophysical processes are expected. A proven record of successfull acquisition of competitive third-party funding and leadership skills is essential.
The work is to be carried out at the TLS, a research institute of the Free State of Thuringia. The professorship is associated with the establishment of a new research area at the TLS.
The research interest of our new colleague contributes to the possibility of building and sharpening the profile of the TLS. Particular emphasis is on a complementary profile to the existing research areas at the institute in order to complete the existing competences in the best possible way. The TLS has positioned itself internationally, especially in the field of exoplanet research, star formation, extragalactics and radio astronomy. In addition, the question of the origin of stellar and solar magnetic activity is a new focus at the TLS and aims to play a significant role in the study and prediction of space weather phenomena and the interaction of stars and planetary systems. The TLS has built a new solar laboratory where the instruments for a new Solar Physics Research Integrated Network Group (SPRING) of observatories will be developed that will enable continuous monitoring of the sun.
For the observation of exoplanet systems, the TLS participates in instrumentation projects for ground-based support of the ESA PLATO mission and the ELT.
In the field of Extragalactic Astronomy, the TLS deals with the study of galactic and intergalactic magnetic fields and gas and develops spectro-polarimetric investigations in the radio frequency range. With the operation of a station of the LOFAR radio telescope and its and its role as representing entity in the LOFAR ERIC, the TLS has established radio astronomy as one of the focal points at the institute.
Active participation in the establishment of a junior research group on R&D in this field is explicitly desired, as is intensive co-operation with the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy of the Friedrich Schiller University. Future tasks will also include participation in teaching in all relevant courses of study at the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy. In particular, basic lectures in astronomy and special lectures in physics and astrophysics are to be represented. The languages of teaching are German and English. Employment requirements are a successfully completed doctorate, habilitation or equivalent academic achievements, and pedagogical aptitude. Appointment as a W3 professor shall be for life as a civil servant, provided that the legal requirements are met. In the case of a first-time appointment to a professorship, the professorship shall initially be filled as a W2 professorship for a fixed term of six years. After a maximum of six years and subject to a positive tenure evaluation, appointment to a W3 professorship shall take place without the vacancy being readvertised.
