Position Description
The Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) is an institute of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. (FVB). The FVB comprises seven non-university research institutes in Berlin which are funded by the federal and state governments. The research institutes belong to the Leibniz Association.
WIAS invites applications as
Research Assistant Position (f/m/d)
(Ref. 25/10)
in the Research Group
“Numerical Mathematics and Scientific Computing“
(Head: Prof. Dr. V. John) starting September 1, 2025.
The position is assigned to the research project "Randomization of Surrogates for the Quantification of Domain Uncertainty Propagation in Cardiovascular Models" as part of the Berlin Mathematics Research Center MATH+.
The purpose of this position is to conduct research in the field of model reduction and uncertainty quantification for biological flows.
The goal of the project is, in particular, the development of robust methods to quantify the propagation of domain uncertainties in cardiovascular simulations, especially with regard to the estimation of biomarkers for image-based diagnostics.
The project is a collaboration between WIAS (Research Group “Numerical Mathematics and Scientific Computing” – PIs Alfonso Caiazzo and Francesco Romor) and FU Berlin (PI Ana Djurdjevac).
We are looking for: a highly motivated researcher with at least 3 years of research experience in a field related to numerical fluid mechanics, scientific computing, or model-order reduction, who is willing to engage in innovative and interdisciplinary research questions. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to collaborate with application partners in clinical and preclinical research. Strong expertise in at least one of the following areas is expected: numerical analysis, scientific computing, model reduction, uncertainty quantification, machine learning, fluid mechanics. Experience with scientific object-oriented programming languages (C++, Python, or Julia) is highly relevant. Knowledge of cardiovascular imaging is desirable but not required.
What we offer:
- WIAS Berlin is a premier research institution known for its strength in optimization, optimal control, dynamical systems, and applied mathematics in general.
- Mobile working
- A certified (Audit berufundfamilie) family-friendly work environment.
- Berlin is one of the most culture-rich and diverse international cities in the world. It offers endless opportunities to enjoy life outside work, while being very affordable compared to other major cities. Neither the job nor living in Berlin requires German language (although WIAS offers free German courses). We highly welcome international applications. Scientifically, Berlin offers a rich landscape with numerous opportunities for research, as well as job prospects in academia and industry.
- The successful postdoc will receive careful mentorship both from the supervisor and from other peers through a dedicated mentorship program.
The working hours are 39 hours per week and the position is remunerated according to TVoeD Bund. The position is initially limited to two years. The Weierstraß Institute is an equal opportunity employer.
We explicitly encourage female researchers to apply for the offered position. Among equally qualified applicants, disabled candidates will be given preference.
Please upload complete application documents (cover letter, curriculum vitae, certificates) including up to two reference contacts via our online job-application facility using the button “Apply online ”. Interviews with suitable candidates will begin in July 2025 and continue until the position is filled.
We are looking forward to your application!
