We have a successful record of activating molecular N2 or CO2 through thermal heterogeneous catalysis. For instance, we recently identified a new class of promotion based on spin quenching on Cobalt and Nickel doing surface science experiment for the ammonia synthesis. We are currently further pursuing these systems continuing these fundamental surface science experiments (Science 383 (2024) 1357). We are aiming at realizing high area materials capitalizing on this insight.
A similar system as described above for ammonia has also been established for or CO2 hydrogenation where we also have a long tradition of combining fundamental level as well as for high area materials. New catalyst could here be sought for synthesis of higher hydrocarbons and alcohols.
Your work will involve synthesis, test, and characterization. At SurfCat, we make extensive use of surface science techniques and collaborate closely VISION, which provides access to advanced microscopy tools. Promising catalysts may also be studied at large-scale research facilities, such as synchrotrons, for EXAFS and high-pressure XPS measurements.
We also work in close partnership with the CatTheory group, using DFT-calculations and microkinetic modelling to explore reaction pathways and identify promising catalyst compositions.
Responsibilities and qualifications
We are looking for a motivated and collaborative postdoc who is eager to contribute to our research. The candidate should have a PhD degree in Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Science and insight in catalysis. It is essential that the candidate has experience with synthesizing, characterization, and testing of catalysts, particularly using a surface science approach.
Experience with ammonia directly from N2 or CO2 hydrogenation is considered an advantage, though not a requirement. However, practical experience with ultra-high vacuum condition and using surface science methods like XPS in combination with reaction cells is a necessary qualification for this position.
