Job Description
The Department of Psychology, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southern Denmark (SDU) invites applications for a postdoctoral position in audio-visual perception. The position is available for 34 months. The starting date is October 1, 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter.
Research environment
The postdoc will be affiliated with the Research Unit of Health and Cognitive Psychology. A closely related postdoctoral position is available in the Technical Audiology Section , Department of Clinical Research, SDU. The two postdoctoral researchers are expected to work in close collaboration to achieve the project goals. Candidates meeting the criteria for both positions are encouraged to apply for both positions separately.
Project description
Many adults suffer from hearing and vision (‘dual-sensory’) loss. Because these losses are typically handled separately, the ‘true’ handicap caused by them is underestimated. Furthermore, because routine diagnostic tests focus on sensory instead of perceptual processes, communication-related consequences may be overlooked. Little is still known about the perceptual deficits that individuals with dual-sensory loss experience and how these deficits can be detected and compensated. Using various experimental procedures, these knowledge gaps will be tackled. Novel diagnostic tests will be developed, allowing the underlying mechanisms to be studied and deficits to be detected. Furthermore, novel approaches to compensating for dual-sensory loss will be explored. Overall, this will lead to a better understanding of audio-visual processing and to new diagnostic and rehabilitation strategies.
The position is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark. It involves a collaboration between SDU (Profs. Tobias Neher & Søren Krogh Andersen), Oldenburg University (Prof. Stefan Debener), the Eriksholm Research Centre (Dr. Dorothea Wendt) and the Departments of Audiology (Dr. Rikke Schnack-Petersen) and Ophthalmology (Prof. Jakob Grauslund) at Odense University Hospital.
Qualifications
The postdoc position is suited for a person with a strong interest in experimental research with participants with and without hearing and vision impairments. Expertise with both auditory and visual perception will be a plus. Candidates with expertise in either modality are also encouraged to apply.
Ideally, applicants for the position should satisfy the following requirements:
- PhD degree in vision science, psychology, cognitive (neuro)science, or a related field
- Expertise in visual perception. Experience with auditory or multisensory perception is a plus.
- Good command of psychophysics and statistics
- Good command of Matlab or a similar programming language
- Very good command of the English language in spoken and written form
- Research experience as evidenced by conference contributions and peer-reviewed journal articles in a field related to the offered position
- Prior experience with EEG is a plus
- Some knowledge of the Danish language is a plus
Candidates who are about to obtain these qualifications are also encouraged to apply.
For further information about the position, please contact Prof. Søren Krogh Andersen, SDU (email: skandersen@health.sdu.dk ; phone: +45 6550 4957).
Applications must include:
- A letter of motivation (max. 1 page)

- Master and PhD degree certificates
- A complete and numbered list of publications
- Three scientific publications considered to be most important for the advertised position (please note that one file per publication must be submitted)

The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
The minimum salary for a postdoc with a PhD-degree will be DKK 36.655.47 (equivalent to approximately EUR 4,914.22) per month before taxes. An additional 18.07% of salary is paid into the pension scheme by the university.
