NAIT is home to one of Canada's largest and most productive polytechnic and college applied research teams. The Centre for Boreal Research (CBR) is a satellite facility of NAIT located in Peace River, Alberta. CBR promotes the wise use of Alberta’s boreal forest by providing real-world solutions through applied research and education. The centre works closely with industry, government and research collaborators.

We are seeking a leader of the Boreal Forest Plant & Seed Technology Access Centre (TAC) at CBR. As Program Manager you will be responsible for managing a portfolio of projects that draw on the technical expertise of the Forest Reclamation, Peatland Restoration, and Plant & Seed Technologies teams of CBR to create learning materials for industry practitioners and for raising awareness among the general public. You will work with Indigenous communities across Treaty 6, 7 and 8 to aid them in establishing capacity, in-community, in greenhouse operations, as well as native seed harvesting, cleaning, testing, storage, tree planting, and reclaimed site monitoring.

The successful candidate will lead an impactful research extension and education program focused on providing training of methods, technologies, and services to advance the capacity of industry to address environmental challenges associated with industrial disturbance in the forest and wetlands of Western Canada. The program works with a broad range of partners, including industry, post-secondary institutions, and communities, to provide educational materials that help resolve the environmental and economic challenges faced by the energy, mining and forestry industries.

The Program Manager will be a leader in the NAIT Applied Sciences Research portfolio - home to a diverse array of teams led by talented Applied Research Chairs in Forest Reclamation; Peatland Restoration; Environmental Monitoring; and Sustainable Mining, among others. You will apply your expertise to work very closely with the CBR Applied Research Chairs to meet the research extension and education needs of our partners.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage with communities to identify research needs and projects, staying current with regional business trends - regular travel to remote communities is expected

  • Assimilate high-level technical knowledge to engage with partners and communicate in written and verbal forms

  • Secure and manage a mix of private and government funding to support operations and project work, ensuring responsible administration

  • Responsible for a significant portion of planning to ensure growth and sustainability of the program, in close collaboration with applied research leadership and the business development team

  • Project oversight through maintaining awareness of project obstacles, milestone completions, and resource needs and coordination of staff

  • Collaborate with Applied Research Chairs in prioritizing workload

  • Lead the hiring, training and development of junior staff

  • Mentor junior staff as they develop project deliverables, milestones and budgets, and then as they execute on projects

  • Ensure the continuation of a strong safety culture

  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders, including communities, government and industry

  • Support non-credit curriculum development

Skills & Abilities:

  • Exceptional and demonstrable leadership skills

  • Exceptional communication, both written and verbal, and ability to understand the needs of customers

  • Experience in presenting technical content to varied audiences

  • Ability to navigate the funding environment available to post-secondary institutions

  • Financial and project management

  • Knowledge of Indigenous language, protocols, customs, community perspectives and challenges

  • Knowledge of United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Calls to Action, and Indian Act

Qualifications:

  • University degree, Master’s (or higher) preferred, in a technical field related to the work done in the program (e.g. Forest Ecology, Environmental Land Management, or similar)

  • Experience working with Indigenous communities considered an asset

  • Experience influencing a team with experience levels ranging from students to technical experts

  • Experience in customer and business development activities considered an asset
