NAIT’s Centre for Data Management and Visualization (CDMV) is recruiting a technically proficient and detail-driven GIS Data Technologist to join our geospatial technologies team. This position is ideal for someone with foundational training in GIS and computer science, who is excited to work at the intersection of geospatial data management, application development, and community-focused collaboration.

The role is integral to the development and support of Indigenous Community-led Atlas (ICA) projects, helping to integrate spatial data, automate mapping workflows, and support custom GIS tool development, while contributing to a modern, ethical, and accessible geospatial infrastructure that supports capacity building in Indigenous Communities.


Key Responsibilities:

Geospatial Data Collection, Processing, and Analysis

  • Consult with internal staff and community partners to assess spatial data needs and availability
  • Collect, clean, convert, and format spatial data from various sources, including GPS, remote sensing, and open data portals
  • Analyze and visualize geospatial patterns using advanced mapping and statistical techniques
  • Design and maintain a geospatial library in standard formats (e.g., GeoJSON, Shapefile, GDB, KML)
  • Support the digitization and georeferencing of legacy maps
  • Assist in the production of high-quality digital maps and interactive data products to support ICA content, fieldwork, and community knowledge-sharing

Curriculum and Exercise Development Support

  • Support the design of interactive mapping exercises and custom data layers for Indigenous Community Atlases
  • Develop visualizations that communicate the spatial dimensions of culture, environment, and governance
  • Assist with written and visual content for ICA educational materials and reporting

Tool/Application Development and Integration

  • Develop and integrate GIS tools, scripts, and web applications to automate workflows (e.g., using Python, ArcGIS API, FME)
  • Embed spatial tools within StoryMaps, dashboards, or other web environments
  • Evaluate and recommend technologies that improve data visualization, accessibility, and integration
  • Support knowledge transfer through internal training and documentation


Skills & Abilities:


  • Demonstrated experience with Esri ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Online

  • Solid programming or scripting skills (e.g., Python, ArcPy, JavaScript, SQL)

  • Experience working with geospatial data formats (e.g., shapefiles, GDB, GeoJSON, raster/DEM)

  • Familiarity with metadata standards and data quality assurance processes
  • Proficient in data collection, manipulation, and analysis techniques
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to ensure data accuracy and integrity
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex spatial data
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to translate present complex technical concepts recommendations to diverse audiences
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment

 

Preferred Skills


  • Knowledge of Indigenous data governance frameworks (e.g., OCAP®, CARE)

  • Experience working with Indigenous organizations or in intercultural GIS contexts

  • Experience with ETL tools such as FME

  • Familiarity with cloud-based GIS services or APIs (e.g., ArcGIS REST, Leaflet, Mapbox)

  • Knowledge of UI/UX for geospatial application interfaces

 

Qualifications:


  • Post-secondary education in GIS, Geomatics, Computer Science, Spatial Data Analytics, or a related technical field

  • Knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Online software is required.
    • Proficiency with ArcGIS software automation including ArcGIS Pro Geoprocessing Toolboxes, scripting tools, and ModelBuilder would be highly valued.

  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, MS Teams is required

  • Minimum 12 months of related experience

  • Equivalencies may be considered


Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services or the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).


Remuneration: $49,161.84 - $69,092.14 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification – Research Technologist II).  

This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
