The General Counsel serves as NAIT’s chief legal advisor, providing strategic and proactive legal guidance on a wide range of matters including governance, regulatory compliance, contracts, intellectual property, risk management, and litigation. This role is pivotal in supporting institutional integrity, sound decision-making, and good governance across the organization.

Reporting to the Interim VP Students, Human Resources and International, this position also serves as a resource to the Board of Governors, supporting effective board operations and ensuring compliance with applicable legislation and bylaws.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide timely and pragmatic legal advice to senior leadership, academic and administrative departments, and the Board of Governors.
  • Manage and oversee all legal matters involving the institution, including contracts, disputes, and compliance.
  • Engage and work collaboratively with external legal counsel.
  • Lead institutional governance activities and serve as resource to the Board of Governors.
  • Monitor and interpret changes in legislation affecting post-secondary education and public institutions.
  • Develop and implement legal risk management strategies, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and institutional policies.
  • Promote legal awareness and deliver training across the institution.
  • Under the Access to Information Act and Protection of Privacy Act, act as the coordinator and manage the institution’s responsibilities.
  • Lead the General Counsel Services department.

Qualifications:


  • Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree and active membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta.   

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive legal experience, preferably in a public sector or post-secondary environment.

  • Experience in governance, contract law, human rights, administrative law, privacy law, intellectual property law, trusts, and/or education law.

Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services or the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).

  • Start date is negotiable.

Remuneration: $155,000.00 - $189,000.00 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package.
