Job Summary
The Biodevice Foundry (https://bme.ubc.ca/biodevice-foundry/ ) is a core-facility based in the UBC’s School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) which is a state-of-the-art facility for the design, fabrication, packaging and application of Biodevices across biological scales that will lead innovation and capacity development in areas of biotech and life sciences. In this ~450 m2 of space, the facility has been built around a clean-room, biofunctionalization area, machine shop and a rapid prototyping facility. The individual will provide technical, electrical and mechanical services to foundry users as well support some of the machining needs of the Engineers in Scrubs Program, which is part of the SBME’s graduate program. The individual will use their expertise to design and fabricate jobs from metals, plastics and wood using the tools available in the workshop and collaborating facilities.
Organizational Status
Reports to the Operations Manager and Staff Scientist of the Biodevice Foundry. Works closely with the Scientific Director of the Foundry.
Work Performed

  • Performs maintenance, assesses and diagnoses faults on scientific instruments placed in the Biodevice Foundry (see list in the web-site). The work may involve electronic, electrical, mechanical, gas and steam control components so the candidate must be capable of performing logical diagnostic procedures using appropriate test equipment and resources such as service manuals, online support sites and in-house training.

  • Fabricates (machining, 3D printing) complex and precise components, modifies equipment to meet specialized requirements.

  • Diagnoses fault and carries out repairs in foundry equipment.

  • Checks for safety issues on repaired equipment used in the building, advising users of potential safety risks, and ensuring that unsafe equipment is removed from service or repaired.

  • Operates machinery such as drilling, grinding and cutting equipment in a safe and controlled manner in a machine shop. Knowledge of CNC operation and programming is an asset.

  • Requires metalworking, woodworking, welding and soldering skills.

  • Manages the Workshop and 3D printing database system to keep track of service history, inventory control and invoicing.

  • Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.

  • Works with students in the Engineers in Scrubs program to understand their prototyping needs for individual projects, advises the students on fabrication methods and design choices, and performs fabrication that is beyond the students’ skills.

  • Performs other related duties as required.


Consequence of Error/Judgement
None, however, may provide training on the Core equipment (autoclaves, glasswashers and ice machines) to new users, including students, postdoctoral fellows, and staff.
Supervision Received
All assignments are issued via the Operations Manager of the Foundry and in consultation with the Scientific Director. Work is performed under general supervision requiring independent judgment.  Routine assignments are performed independently. Receives detailed instructions on new duties or problems.
Supervision Given
None, however, may provide training on the Core equipment in the to new users, including students, postdoctoral fellows, and staff.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from a technical college or institute or completion of a recognized apprenticeship and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of basic plumbing and mechanical maintenance is an asset.
