The University of Iowa School of Art, Art History, and Design seeks applications from emerging to mid-career artists in painting/drawing for the Grant Wood Fellowship Program for the 2026-27 academic year.


Fellowship recipient responsibilities:



  • Teach one class per semester in the University of Iowa School of Art, Art History, and Design, Painting & Drawing Area.  The candidate may teach either an introductory course or an advanced course depending on their strengths and the needs of the program.

  • Present a public lecture about their work

  • Participate in limited public outreach activities (e.g.: workshops, discussion of your work with a local arts organization)

  • Solo or shared exhibition at end of year with the Grant Wood Fellow in Printmaking.


Fellows receive:



  • An appointment as a Grant Wood Visiting Assistant Professor in Painting & Drawing.

  • $40,000 salary and benefits

  • private studio

  • furnished housing (in private, off-campus residences—one and two bedroom apartments depending on needs)

Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any misconduct history or pending research misconduct investigation including but not limited to sexual misconduct in prior employment and provide a related release and will be subject to a criminal background and credential check. 


 

Education Requirement:

MFA in painting/drawing at the time of application or have an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications:

Evidence of a national exhibition record.


University level teaching experience outside of graduate career.


Demonstration of a promising program of creative research that contributes to the current needs of the undergraduate and graduate painting and drawing population.

Desirable Qualifications:

Demonstrates an understanding of a variety of conceptual and material approaches in the teaching of painting/drawing.


Proficiency in critical theory.
