Exploring Robotics in Architecture

Project Overview
This PhD project investigates how robotics can be integrated into architectural systems, bridging the disciplines of robotics, artificial intelligence, and architectural design. The research will explore two primary domains:

  • Embodied Intelligence – Integrating AI into architectural systems through topics such as distributed sensor fusion, reinforcement learning for environmental control, explainable AI for autonomous decision-making, multi-objective optimisation, and large language models as human–building interfaces.
  • Robotics and Actuation – Developing robotic systems embedded within architecture, encompassing swarm robotics, custom actuator design, modular robotics, safety-critical control, human–robot collaboration, and distributed manipulation and coordinated motion.

The PhD student will undertake fundamental and applied research that may include:

  • Developing novel methodologies within the project scope.
  • Designing and conducting simulation and physical experiments.
  • Publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
  • Collaborating with Kinetic AI to align academic research with real-world applications.

Supervisory Team

Successful applicants will join the Department of Design Engineering and Mathematics at Middlesex University as doctoral students. You will work with subject specialists to develop an original contribution to knowledge as well as your skills in research, communication, engagement and impact.

Your project will be supervised by Dr. Kim Tien Ly, in collaboration with Carlos Lora Yunen, Director of Kinetic AI.

Entry Requirements

Essential Criteria

  • MSc (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline (e.g. Computer Science, Robotics, Architecture, or related fields).
  • Knowledge or experience in robotics or architectural systems.
  • Experience in programming (e.g. Python, C++).
  • Strong analytical and simulation skills.

Desirable Criteria

  • Prior experience conducting research or contributing to research publications.

Funding and Support

The studentship will be funded directly by Kinetic AI and covers UK tuition fees and provides a tax-free stipend of £22,780 per annum for three years. Additional funding for equipment, travel, and conference attendance will be available from Kinetic AI to support your research activities.

This studentship is open to UK students only.

Start date: As soon as possible.
