The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. This position is part of Muoniverse, a Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) dedicated to advancing muon science across particle physics, quantum materials, and applications ranging from energy research to cultural heritage.
Muoniverse brings together 30 research teams from universities, research institutions, and museums in a highly collaborative network, supported by the Muoniverse Research School, which coordinates training, exchanges, and career development for PhD students and postdocs.

For the new NCCR Muoniverse, we are looking for a
PhD Student in Thin Film Condensed Matter Physics
Your tasks
- Develop of a thin-film preparation chamber
- Study thin-film, hybrid interfaces of quantum materials
- Perform low-energy muon-spin spectroscopy (LE-μSR) and beta-detected NMR (β-NMR) on thin films
- Contribute to ongoing activities of the LEM group at PSI and the β-NMR group at CERN
- Participate in teaching and graduate school activities at the University of Zurich

Your profile
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Physics
- Strong interest in instrumentation, data analysis, and experimental techniques
- Background in condensed matter physics or materials science
- Programming skills (C++, Python, ROOT) are a strong asset
- Good command of English (spoken and written)
