Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 41,500 students and about 4,600 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.
The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.
We are looking for a PhD student in Molecular Biology with a special interest in intracellular host-pathogen interactions. The position at the Department of Molecular Biology at Umeå University is temporary for four years to start 1 June 2026, or as agreed. The application deadline is 30 April 2026.
Background and description of tasks
The PhD student will be part of the Sixt lab, which is affiliated with the Department of Molecular Biology. The department is affiliated with the laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS), and the Umeå Centre for Microbial Research (UCMR). This research environment providing interaction with researchers from different research fields and access to various scientific and technical expertise.
The obligate intracellular bacterial pathogen Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common infectious cause of blindness, as well as the most prevalent bacterial agent of sexually transmitted infections. Within its host cell, the pathogen replicates within a membrane-bound compartment (the inclusion), whose stability depends on secreted bacterial effectors interacting with host proteins. This project will apply cell biological, genetic, proteomic, lipidomic, and microscopic approaches to understand how inclusion composition and interactions maintain inclusion stability. The project will generate a knowledge foundation that may enable future therapeutic targeting of inclusion stability.
A person who is employed as a PhD student shall primarily devote himself/herself to his/her own education. The project and research environment will give the dedicated student the opportunity to train as a first-class researcher.

In addition, courses equivalent to 30 credits at advanced level in the subject area of molecular biology are required, including an independent project of at least 15 credits.
To enable interdisciplinary initiatives qualifications other than the applicant's subject-specific
competence in molecular biology may be assessed as meeting the specific entry requirements.
