Offer Description

He or she will be based with the 'Monde byzantin' team at the Orient et Méditerranée laboratory (UMR 8167), as well as at the Institut français d'archéologie orientale (IFAO, Cairo). He or she will work alongside the other ChrIs-cross members and conduct fieldwork in the archives and Cairo neighbourhoods being investigated.

The PhD contract, which was advertised as part of the ERC ChrIs-Cross project (Entangled Christianities in Jerusalem and the Middle East: A Cross-Cultural, Bottom-Up Approach, 12th–16th Centuries), focuses on the social and territorial integration of Christians in Mamluk Cairo. In line with the research carried out by team members on Christians in Jerusalem, the PhD student will adopt a de-compartmentalised approach to Christian and Islamic studies. Rather than focusing on one group or writing the history of one community, the successful candidate will study the interrelationships between Christians belonging to different churches — particularly the Copts and Melkites — and between Christians and Muslims, whether they are Cairo's inhabitants or the Mamluk sultanate's religious, legal and political authorities. Unlike a historiography that privileges intellectual and religious history, the PhD student will focus on social and political dynamics, studying the daily relations between Christians, the relations between Christians and Muslims, and the relations between Christians and Islamic institutions based on legal interactions. They will also study how these interactions take root and materialise in urban space. To this end, the PhD student will base their investigation on a typologically diverse corpus, prioritising Islamic legal archives preserved by Christian institutions, following the example of research carried out by the ChrIs-cross team on documents preserved in Jerusalem.
