Position Announcement

Joining the Utah Valley University Writing Center offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact across campus while developing highly transferable professional skills. Tutors work individually and collaboratively with writers from across campus, including undergraduates, graduates, and graduate school applicants, providing support throughout the full writing lifecycle. process. This role provides hands-on experience in coaching, communication, and critical thinking through flexible in-person and online tutoring environments, all within a supportive academic setting guided by an experienced administrative team.
Beyond tutoring, Writing Center tutors play an active role in strengthening writing culture at UVU by contributing to workshops, events, and resource development. Tutors may also take on leadership opportunities through mentoring and supporting fellow tutors. Comprehensive tutor education and certification are provided, ensuring growth, confidence, and professional preparation for future careers in education, communication, research, and beyond. This role is ideal for individuals who value collaboration, enjoy supporting others’ success, and want to be part of a mission-driven team dedicated to academic excellence.


Summary of Responsibilities

  • Tutors writers in one-on-one or group tutorials, either live, face-to-face sessions or online asynchronous/synchronous sessions. 
  • Works on specialized projects, workshops, handouts, mentoring, etc. 
  • Attends weekly training meetings and works on certification/training materials. 
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

  • A high school diploma or GED. 
  • One year of college-level coursework. 
  • Demonstrated familiarity with courses offered by the corresponding department.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Preference given to those with previous experience tutoring writing and those with CRLA certification. 
  • Bachelor's degree and some graduate-level education preferred.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of writing, tutoring, and learning processes and strategies.
  • Knowledge and strong foundation of academic writing, including disciplinary writing and writing at the graduate and professional levels.
  • Familiarity with campus resources.
Skills
  • Skills in interpersonal communication, problem-solving, and decision-making.
  • Skills with computer applications.
Abilities
  • Ability to collaborate with students, faculty/staff, and/or community patrons to enhance their knowledge of the tutored subject.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to read, write, and be understood in the English language.
  • Ability to motivate students.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to accept and complete assigned projects.
