DescriptionThe University of North Alabama’s Department of Cinematic Arts and Theatre invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in the area of theatre beginning in fall 2026. This appointment is a nine-month contract with full benefits. The department is particularly interested in candidates with experience in technical theatre, design, and production who can contribute to a collaborative and active production season.
The Department of Cinematic Arts and Theatre is a proud member of the UNA School of the Arts, alongside wonderful colleagues from the Departments of Music, Visual Arts & Design, and Entertainment Industry. Our department is home to the George Lindsey UNA Film Festival, Alabama’s longest-running film festival, which welcomes filmmakers from across the country and beyond. The department also maintains an active production culture, producing feature films and at least four main stage theatre productions each year, including a musical. Together, these opportunities reflect a vibrant creative environment in which students and faculty engage in ambitious work across both stage and screen.
The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active record of creative and/or scholarly work while demonstrating excellence in teaching and mentorship. Responsibilities include developing an ongoing agenda of research and/or creative activity appropriate to the field; contributing to student recruitment and retention efforts; attending faculty and departmental meetings; mentoring students within the program; participating in curriculum development and assessment; assisting with the stewardship of departmental equipment and facilities; and fostering a supportive learning environment.

Essential Job DutiesResponsibilities include: teach a 12-credit-hour course load per semester, with the possibility of a 3-credit-hour workload assignment each semester tied to theatrical production; teach courses in areas such as theatre appreciation, writing for the stage and screen, theatre design and technology, acting, and directing, depending on departmental needs and the candidate’s expertise; mentor students in their academic, creative, and professional development; collaborate with film and theatre faculty on experiential learning opportunities and interdisciplinary projects; supervise departmental productions and projects, which may require flexible and evening hours; maintain an active agenda of creative and/or scholarly work relevant to the field of theatre; attend faculty and departmental meetings and participate in shared governance; contribute to curriculum development, assessment, and program growth; assist in the management of departmental equipment and facilities, including supervision of student equipment room workers; participate in student recruitment, retention, and outreach efforts; support departmental events, including the George Lindsey UNA Film Festival, Trumbauer Theatre Festival, department productions, and other special programs; advise students academically and professionally; foster an inclusive and supportive environment for students from diverse backgrounds; and perform additional duties aligned with departmental needs and the candidate’s strengths.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities include: Proficient knowledge of contemporary theatre practices and pedagogy; strong oral and written communication skills; ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from a wide range of backgrounds and levels of experience; ability to use current instructional and production technologies appropriate to theatre education; ability to mentor student artists in performance, production, and/or design processes; and the ability to collaborate effectively with production staff, including the staff of Norton Auditorium/George S. Lindsey Theatre, on departmental productions.
Minimum QualificationsMinimum qualifications include: a terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in theatre or a related field is required; ABD candidates may be considered but must complete the degree program by the appointment start date; demonstrated college-level teaching experience in theatre or closely related disciplines is required; evidence of an active professional and/or creative record in theatre is required; a background in technical theatre, theatre design, or production is preferred; experience mentoring student designers and/or technicians is preferred; experience working collaboratively in production environments with technical and design staff is preferred; and the ability to teach courses in theatre design and technology in addition to other core theatre offerings is preferred.
