This Human Resources Student Assistant position provides comprehensive administrative and operational support to the Housing and Residential Experience (HRE) Human Resources team. The role facilitates HR processes for student and temporary staff, assists with onboarding and compliance, maintains confidential records and reports, supports the implementation of Federal Work Study initiatives, and contributes to event planning and payroll coordination. Through proactive communication and detail-oriented assistance, the position plays a key role in fostering a smooth and efficient HR experience within HRE.
- Serve as an administrative liaison between prospective and current employees and the HRE HR team, responding professionally to inquiries in person, by email, and through the HRE HR shared inbox; escalate issues as appropriate.
- Assist with onboarding Student Assistants and Temporary Appointment candidates, including communication, documentation, and coordination.
- Provide proactive follow-up and support to candidates throughout the onboarding process to ensure a smooth transition into their roles.
- Support the implementation and administration of the Federal Work Study (FWS) program within Housing & Residential Experience.
- Assist with updating and maintaining Federal Work Study (FWS) and student job openings each academic year, ensuring accuracy and compliance with university requirements.
- Maintain and organize confidential HR files and records, ensuring compliance with FIU policies and federal/state regulations.
- Assist with maintaining HR tracking reports, including Hiring Status Report, Separations log, and Access and Termination Report, ensuring timely and accurate updates.
- Assist with employee engagement efforts through active participation on the Employee Engagement Committee, supporting the planning and execution of initiatives.
- Assist in coordinating and hosting employee events, supporting logistical planning and ensuring a positive experience for all attendees.
- Assist with processing Person of Interest (POI) requests and documentation.
- Assist with submitting employee changes and personnel actions through ePAF in accordance with university procedures.
- Assist with employee recruitment efforts through active participation in the Recruitment and Selection Committee to support hiring by reviewing candidates, conducting interviews, and contributing to selection decisions.
- Provide general administrative support and assist with special projects as assigned by the HRE HR team.
- Perform other duties as assigned that are logically related to the position and that support the HR Manager and HR Specialist in achieving departmental goals.
- Undergraduate students must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA at the time of application and maintain a 2.5 cumulative and semester GPA for the duration of their employment. Graduate students must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA at the time of application and maintain a 3.0 cumulative and semester GPA for the duration of their employment. Grade checks will be completed at the end of every semester.
- Must be registered for at least six (6) credit hours as an undergraduate student or three (3) credit hours as a graduate student.
- Must be and remain in good standing with the Department and University, including no significant or recent student conduct history. All Housing Student Assistants will consent to conduct checks prior to hiring and at the end of every semester.
- Prior to employment, must successfully complete a background check and fingerprinting as per the Housing and Residential Experience requirement.
- A current student pursuing a Human Resources Management degree or a degree in a related field.
- Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with highly sensitive information.
Student Assistant
- Applicants must be currently enrolled as a student at FIU with a minimum of six (6) credits as an Undergraduate student or three (3) credits as a Graduate student during the Fall and Spring semesters.
- During the Summer semesters, Students need only remain enrolled and are not required to take credit hours, but cannot have graduated.
- Upon decreasing credit hours or graduating, student employment must end.
- Monday through Friday
- Available between 8:30AM - 5:00 PM
- Must be available to work 20 hours per week during the academic semesters.
$16.50/hour
