Position Description:

The Tolman research group in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Iowa invites applications for a postdoctoral research position. The successful candidate will work on the development of axion–plasma and dark photon–plasma interaction theory and on the use of this theory to search for astrophysical signatures of dark matter. The position provides full support for research travel, publication expenses, and computing resources.

Depending on the candidate's background and interests, research activities may include:

  • Theoretical studies of modifications to plasma wave physics arising from dark matter interactions.

  • Development and use of numerical simulation tools to study plasma–dark matter interactions.

  • Analysis of astrophysical data to search for observational signatures of this physics.

The group also pursues research in other areas of plasma astrophysics, and there may be opportunities for the postdoctoral scholar to engage in these topics if interested.

The postdoctoral research scholar is expected to produce first-author publications in peer-reviewed journals and to present research results at national and international scientific conferences.

Work authorization sponsorship in J-1 status is available through the University of Iowa.

Education Requirement:

  • PhD in physics, astrophysics, astronomy, or a closely related field by the position start date. Candidates who have completed all requirements but whose degree will officially conferred at a later date will still be considered.

Required Qualifications:

Applicants should have demonstrated experience in at least one of the following areas:

  • Development of fluid or kinetic plasma simulation codes

  • Axion or dark photon phenomenology

  • Astrophysical observation and data analysis

  • Analytic plasma theory

  • Compact object astrophysics

  • Laboratory astrophysics experiments and/or theoretical modeling of such experiments

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience spanning multiple areas listed above is preferred.
