Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one (1) part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Baro Sports Editor (Summer 2026) for the Orange Media Network at Oregon State University (OSU).
The Sports Editor is responsible for student-produced sports content for the print newspaper, website and social media channels of The Daily Barometer and OMN Sports. The sports chief assigns, coordinates and manages sports coverage, including written stories, highlights and other multimedia content.
Students in this role will develop these essential skills for future employment: communication, critical thinking, professionalism.
The Sports Chief employment dates are as follows:
  • Summer Start: June 12, 2026-Sept. 8, 2026
  • Academic Start: Sept. 8, 2026 – June 15, 2026

Pay Rate:
  • Full Start: 20 hours per week, $1,344 total during onboarding

Position Duties
Responsibilities:
Sports Editor Responsibilities
  • Coordinate sports coverage by pitching, assigning, covering and editing coverage and determining which stories require photography, video, audio and other multimedia content. Coverage should include features, profiles, investigations and other sports news in addition to game recaps
  • Assist in Baro sports page design during production days, working closely with Photo in page design and reviewing pages prior to publication
  • Coordinate radio sports play-by-play broadcasts with FM station manager and assistant sports editor, selecting games to broadcast of KBVR-FM and providing necessary information for broadcasts (schedule must be decided at least one month prior to season)
  • Regularly update social media platforms and Sports section of website with fresh stories, photos, videos and other content
  • Hold weekly cohort meetings with Sports Cohort staff and adviser to train, review the week’s strengths and areas for improvement, plan and execute activities for the upcoming week, month, and term
  • Ensure that all articles have been copyedited for accuracy
  • Ensure all sports assignments accurately represent the story, follow proper ethical guidelines and capture multiple perspectives
  • Ensure all staffers obtain proper credentials for game coverage in a timely manner
  • Ensure all deadlines are met as assigned
  • Encourage and create a sense of urgency to ensure sports coverage appears on all platforms, including the website and social media platforms, in a timely fashion
  • Assist with breaking and other news coverage as needed, including nights, weekends and academic breaks
  • Attend weekly editor meetings and redmark meetings
  • Build and maintain relationships with partners and stakeholders
  • Grow audience engagement
  • Work to ensure that OMN program content is current, relevant, and consistent with OMN’s mission, vision, and policies
  • Act in a professional manner at all times

Communication
  • Respond to emails, messages, team chats and phone calls the same day, professionally representing OMN
  • Ensure you are using, checking and responding to project management platform (Basecamp, Discord, etc.)
  • Work 20 regular in-office hours each week for Orange Media Network, at least half of these hours should be during regular business hours (8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday). Hours may vary during different stages of the term
  • Notify adviser immediately should any ethical, legal, personnel or controversial problems occur

  • Ensure designs and content are centered on equitable representation and inclusion, with attention to impact on historically underrepresented and marginalized communities and constituencies

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Knowledgeable in newsgathering, news values and fact-checking strategies
  • Willing to learn Associated Press Style, particularly for sports, and to work within the SPJ Code of Ethics
  • Able to work flexible hours including nights, weekends and academic breaks
  • Is organized and reliable
  • Is a strong writer, communicator and comfortable with public speaking
  • Is experienced with coaching and with giving and receiving feedback
  • Able to remain professional and calm when working with difficult individuals and situations
  • Is knowledgeable and experienced in building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders and partners
  • Served as a member of paid OMN staff for at least 6 months – or – as a volunteer OMN staff for at least 12 months
  • Must complete all elements of the On-Boarding Curriculum before beginning role
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Had been a paid member of staff for at least 12 months
  • Had prior attendance and participation in OMN Fall training
